MSI ECOlution press event from Taipei

Lars Nilsson | | Mar 5, 2008 5:57 AM CST

Last week we attend a small CeBIT preview for the press in Taiwan were MSI talked a bit about ECOlution, which is MSI's take on being more environmentally friendly among other things. Possibly the most exciting of the things shown in terms of what was easy to make out was their prototype CPU fan which uses a technology similar to a sterling engine which we told you about here. Now we've gotten around to uploading a short video we shot at the event which will give you a better idea of what it looks like in action.

The noise you're hearing is actually from the fan itself, but MSI reassured us that this was only a prototype issue and that production fans should be quiet, due to different materials being used and a better manufacturing process being applied. This was of course far from the only thing on show and we've got pictures of a fair few other things to show you. First up we have a couple of pictures of MSI's EFI BIOS and it looks like a cracking way of access and changing all the BIOS options. Our Editor, Cameron Wilmot had a quick go as you can see from the picture below, although we weren't allowed to change any of the settings.

Skype on Sony PSP in March

John Freeman | | Mar 4, 2008 8:15 AM CST

Sony has announced that Skype services will be available to all Japanese PSP users from March 18.

After Sony confirmed that the Playstation portable (PSP) will incorporate a Skype Web phone function that will allow users to phone Skype contacts the world over provided they have the Skype software installed on a PC, or a similarly setup PSP earlier this year, there were issues with the microphone. The move is seen as an attempt to boost sales which are flagging behind Nintendo's DS sales.

Acer to acquire E-TEN

John Freeman | Business, Financial & Legal | Mar 4, 2008 8:01 AM CST

Acer announced that it will acquire E-TEN Information Systems, a well known and respected manufacturer of smartphone mobile and handheld devices.

The acquisition has been accepted by all parties involved, and the undisputed takeover (to date) will go on, subject to the usual takeover procedures such as approval from shareholders and of course if the government regulators approve.

Acer over the last year has had a strong showing, with its acquisition of Gateway, and Packard Bell strengthening capabilities across their entire range of products, but in particular the mobile technologies. The acquisition of E-TEN will be another feather in the cap for the synergies of the hotly contested mobile devices arena.
