AMD 45nm said to be ready for Q3

John Freeman | | Mar 18, 2008 10:04 AM CDT

Britain and the Commonwealth regions of the world are well known to support the underdog. In fact this is exactly the kind of training Intel employees are given in terms of their preparation for unsolicited calls from journalists from those regions as read on Mad Mike Magee's Blog. You can see it here.

While Chipzilla prepares for any possibility from pesky journalists (residual olden day garbage apparently) while basking in the "now" glow of Larrabee, Nehalem and Atom as the usual suspects, AMD have been busy little bee's with a plan to get all high-end CPU's made from the 45nm production process done before Q2. They showed some of their wares at CeBit, giving us an indication that all is not lost as yet.

IBM's Nanophotonic Switch detailed

John Freeman | | Mar 18, 2008 10:00 AM CDT

IBM is a brand name known for innovation. Countless accolades decree this, and no less of a feat is the recent announcement that their scientists have developed a Nanophotonic switch which is so tiny as to be called the tiniest switch ever.

Compared to the edge of a piece of paper, if the thickness (grain) was equally divided 100 times, only then would you be in the same ballpark. This advancement gives IBM scientists yet another way to improve interconnects within chips.

Intel Multicore Architecture Briefing

Cameron Wilmot | | Mar 18, 2008 5:30 AM CDT

Intel recently held a press event in the US discussing its upcoming multicore architecture plans for its future products.

It is all most probably a prelude of what you can expect to hear and see at the upcoming IDF shows this year in a little less detail. The next lot of major news you'll hear about Intel will be next month at IDF China but for now there is plenty of good reading to be had - far too much to go over here.

Concerns addressed about GX2 article

Shawn Baker | RAM | Mar 16, 2008 2:01 AM CDT

Okay, the first thing that has to be said... Nvidia knows our contact details and if they want to start sending us products under NDA instead of these mystery companies, we are happy to cooperate, just as AMD has recently agreed to do.

We want to hear negative comments about our work as much as anyone else does about their work. But the bottom line is, when you have been in this game as long as us, you get use to it and it is like water off a ducks back. We understand you simply cannot please everyone.

What we do have a problem with is when people take the time and effort to post negative comments about our content without actually taking the time to read it and verify what they are posting in forums - such as "Chris Ray" who is an Nvidia employed forums member. A lot of the issues that people have mentioned with our GX2 Early Test were actually covered in the article - they just did not read the actual article.

Thermaltake GunMet Orb cooler is out

John Freeman | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Mar 14, 2008 3:10 AM CDT

If the DuOrb, Blue Orb or even the Golden Orb is not enough Orbage action for you, then Thermaltake have yet another Orb, but this one is called the GunMet Orb - if you don't know what color it is, you didn't read between the lines.

The "gun metal" metallic finish is a marketing ploy no doubt to glorify the standard metal tones without a colored amalgam adding to the cost. The obvious link to weapons of war means it has to be geared for gamers, and high-end enthusiasts who constantly battle their machine to greater heights of performance. The Universal cooler fits on both Intel and AMD CPU sockets.
