Shattered Horizon brings combat to zero G

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 16, 2009 11:42 AM CDT

FutureMark Game Studio is working hard on a new game named Shattered Horizon. This game will be a multiplayer game that puts you into a Zero Gravity playing field.

The game will be a first person multiplayer (like the old Quake Arena) however you do not have the limits of gravity. You are free to move and fight in 3 full dimensions. FGS (FutureMark Game Studio) have been working hard to perfect the zero gravity physics that will enhance the game play.

The setting of the game is amongst the "Arc" this is the debris left over from a titanic explosion on the moon that has now settled into Earth orbit.

Intel shows Core i5 and i7 are faster than Q9650

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 16, 2009 10:37 AM CDT

Intel put out some numbers to show that Core i7 and Core i5 are viable options and performs better than the older Core 2 Quad.

In a series of five tests (some very old) we see the Lynnfield i5 @ 2.93GHz outperforming the C2Q 9650 @ 3.0GHz by a minimum of 9%.

This is not unexpected as the new CPU has 8 threads per cycle to play with across four cores. But what is a little disturbing is that the i7 950 @ 3.06GHz was not much faster than the i5 @ 2.93GHz and in a couple of tests was actually slower.

Microsoft to put in Stereo 3D support into Xbox

Rumors are fun things, at times you can picture them happening and being a great jump forward for a product, company, etc. At other times they are just plain silly.

This is exactly where the rumor that Microsoft will be putting in stereoscopic 3D support into next generation Xboxs fits. The rumor says that the next Xbox 360 will have Natal motion sensing technology but that the Xbox 720 will not only have Natal but those cheap and cheesy 3d glasses you see at movies.

It then goes on to say that the new Xbox 720 won't start shipping until 3D HD TV support is more wide spread. This means that in 4-5 years Microsoft would be putting in support for a 3D technology that is outdated today.

Zune HD might have Tegra Inside

Sean Kalinich | | Jun 16, 2009 9:40 AM CDT

nVidia might have scored a big win with the new Microsoft Zune HD. According to a rumor from Donanimhaber.com the new Zune HD will be powered by an nVidia Tegra SoC.

This could be big for both MS and nVidia as the Tegra will give the Zune a much needed performance to power consumption boost while nVidia will gain a good partner in MS.

Granted the original Zune was not nearly the success it could have been, but bad marketing and high prices caused it to lag behind other companies.

Western Digital enters the SSD Market

Sean Kalinich | Storage | Jun 16, 2009 9:08 AM CDT

Western Digital is doing a 180 today as they have just announced their new line of SSDs. The funny thing is that six months ago they were saying there was no market for SSDs.

Boy I guess all of those reviews spec sheets, price lists and everything else were all just a Funonion induced dream.

If I am reading this right; it looks like WD made the comment, realized that it missed the boat, bought a company that actually makes SSDs and now is quietly releasing them and hoping no one remembers they said there was no market.

Rumours PC Partner to retool for Larrabee

Sylvie Barak | | Jun 15, 2009 4:12 PM CDT

There's nothing quite like a good dose of rumour and spec to kick start a week, and this week is no exception, with a little birdie telling us that PC partner - owner of both Sapphire and Zotac - may be mulling a retooling operation to accommodate Intel's Larrabee.

Protecting its upcoming product with the secrecy most countries reserve for their nuclear weaponry, Intel is maintaining almost absolute silence on Larrabee.

Even analysts are apparently being kept in the dark, with most tentatively putting their bets on Intel initially aiming its long anticipated offerings at high-end graphics for workstations and HPC, only then to filter down to PCs - starting with gaming machines.

Sapphire's new 4730 cards coming soon

Sylvie Barak | | Jun 15, 2009 3:05 PM CDT

We've heard word that Sapphire's new 4730 cards will be hitting European shelves on Tuesday 23rd June, with worldwide availability following shortly thereafter.

Given that these 4770 fall-out parts will only be made available to AMD's 'special friends' -Sapphire and Powercolor - sales are expected to be massive, especially at a price of €79 including vat.

The product is only JUST coming through to the channel, so no pics yet, but we've sneakily managed to get hold of a snap of Neil Spicer, Sapphire's Head of Sales for Northern Europe.
