NVIDIA's 'A New Dawn' GeForce GTX tech demo looks mighty pretty

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Jul 24, 2012 2:05 AM CDT

NVIDIA have released the tech demo for their latest and greatest GeForce GTX 600 series of GPUs dubbed 'A New Dawn'. It features the ever-so-gorgeous Dawn, looking (or is that rendered?) better than ever.

I don't have any GTX 600 series cards myself, but if I did you'd be hearing my personal thoughts on it. But, The Tech Report, er, reports that that on their test rig, which is powered by SLI GTX 680's at 2560x1600 looks "incredible".

You can check it out yourself by downloading it here (a shave under 800MB). I've heard it runs on GTX 500 series cards, so let us know how you go, and what you think of NVIDIA's 'A New Dawn'.

RIM's 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook to launch on the last day of July, retails for $550

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Jul 24, 2012 1:30 AM CDT

It looks like Research in Motion (RIM) are getting into the news today with something positive, instead of job losses, negative finance reports, or delays on BB10.

Mobile Syrup is reporting that they've been informed that the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook is set to launch via Bell, and most likely on other Canadian carriers, next Tuesday, the 31st of July. According to an internal Bell document, the price of the 4G-capable PlayBook will be $549.95.

Spec-wise, we're looking at the usual 7-inch display with a 1024x600 resolution, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4G LTE (and HSPA+), OS 2.0, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear-facing cam capable of shooting 1080p video, 3-megapixel front-facer, 4800 mAh battery and only comes in one size: 32GB.

Thunderbolt's bandwidth to double in 2014 with Falcon Ridge

Anthony Garreffa | Connectivity & Cloud | Jul 24, 2012 12:26 AM CDT

Thunderbolt may not be everywhere yet, but we are still waiting on mechanically-driven hard disk drives to die their mainstream death, for speed reason anyway, but it looks like Thunderbolt has a future filled with speed.

Intel isn't slowing down their rampage of Thunderbolt, with the company already planning more than one new controller, including a Falcon Ridge part that is said to double the current throughput from 10Gbps per channel, to 20Gbps per channel.

Current-generation controllers, codenamed "Cactus Ridge", arrived earlier this year starting with Apple's latest Mac products. Cactus Ridge-based parts combined DisplayPort and either two or four PCI Express lanes (depending on the chip used) over a single cable, with 10Gbps of bidirectional bandwidth per channel.

AMD's gaming executive leaves, joins NVIDIA - he was the man behind AMD's home-run of having tech in all three next-gen consoles

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Jul 23, 2012 7:27 PM CDT

All three next-gen consoles: Nintendo's Wii U, Microsoft's Xbox Next/720 (or whatever they end up calling it) and Sony's PlayStation 4 will all sport AMD GPUs, CPUs or APUs, or a mixture. This is thanks to Bob Feldstein, who up until just recently worked for AMD.

Feldstein has just changed his flag colors, from red, to green. He's joined the ranks of NVIDIA as their vice president of technology licensing at NVIDIA. His position at AMD was as their corporate vice president of business development, as well as leading the company's Botson Design Center, which focused on design engineering for various AMD chips.

Feldstein's work has been said to be instrumental in helping AMD grow into new markets, especially with their tech being in the three next-gen consoles. This means that Feldstein and his work has been a big reason as to how AMD won big contracts away from NVIDIA. NVIDIA spokesman Bob Sherbin said in a statement that Feldstein is "an experienced technology licensing person" and that NVIDIA hired him "to help us think through current and possible future technology licensing projects".

Android FPS game goes free after 'unbelievably high' piracy rates

Trace Hagan | Software & Apps | Jul 23, 2012 4:36 PM CDT

Madfinger Games has said they have been forced into relaunching their Android game at a lower price point due to piracy rates. Even though the app only cost $0.99, Madfinger Games has said that piracy rates were "unbelievably high" and that is why they have relaunched the game for the low price of free.

The game is available for Android users on the Google Play store for users who would like to download it. Of course users who purchased the app are not exactly happy that it is now free and as such have started posting angry one-star reviews. Madfinger Games has released a statement regarding the change, although it's doubtful to relieve much anger:

Windows Store on Windows 8 to enable, facilitate 7-day trials

Trace Hagan | Software & Apps | Jul 23, 2012 2:34 PM CDT

The release of Windows 8 is getting closer and closer every day and Microsoft keeps releasing more and more information about the upcoming operating system. The latest nugget of news is that the app store, aptly and unimaginatively named Windows Store, will enable and facilitate the ability to offer 7-day free trials.

This is a welcome addition. As most users of iOS know, there is no method for offering trials through the app store. While some developers have produced lite versions of their paid apps, significantly more have not. Furthermore, these lite versions aren't exactly the same as a full version trial. Developers also have to worry about putting safeguards in, which isn't the easiest task, especially with Apple's restrictions.

However, Microsoft has detailed how the Windows Store will offer APIs and facilitate the ability to offer 7-day free trials of paid apps. It turns out that a try-before-you-buy offer boosts sales to as high as five times. Microsoft is even going to offer analytics to show how many conversions are made from the trials.

RumorTT: Intel to launch new LGA2011 i7-3970X processor in Q4

Trace Hagan | CPU, APU & Chipsets | Jul 23, 2012 1:28 PM CDT

Websites are reporting that Intel is planning on releasing a new flagship processor in Q4 of this year. The new processor, called the i7-3970X, will utilize the LGA2011 socket and take the title of flagship. The report is claiming that the processor could ship with clock speeds of 3.5GHz and TurboBoost up to 4.0GHz.

Of course, as it is an Extreme Edition processor, it will feature an unlocked multiplier and should overclock like a dream. It will run off of the current SandyBridge-E silicon as the current LGA2011 processors and will be built on the 32nm production process. It will pack 6 cores and 12 threads through the use of HyperThreading.

It is rumored to sport 15MB of last-level cache and will pack a quad-channel DDR3 integrated memory controller, supporting up to 64 GB of DDR3-1600 MHz memory. Pricing will likely be in line with the current i7-3960X and this new chip will likely cause that chip to be gradually phased out in favor of this new, faster chip.

Man designs and builds trashcan which moves to catch flying trash

Trace Hagan | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 23, 2012 12:32 PM CDT

A cool science project has brought something that every person on earth has been waiting for. Think back to all those Sci-Fi movies. What do they all have in common? If you said moving trashcans that adjust their position to catch the trash you have just thrown towards it, you'd be correct.

And one would think with all of the technology we have some researcher would have been able to build this some time ago. Well, it turns out that people who are too lazy to get up and place trash in the can are too lazy to work on inventing a trashcan like this. However, an inventor by the name of FRP has managed to design and build one for himself.

FRP built everything from scratch from the wheeled base to the circuit boards and programming. He used a Kinect sensor that monitors the entire room and watches for trash to become airborne. It then tracks the trash and directs the trashcan to move to where it is likely to land. The video makes it look pretty darn accurate, but FRP admits the accuracy wouldn't win an MVP award quite yet.

iPhone 4S has 3x higher radiation output than Galaxy S3

Trace Hagan | Mobile Devices | Jul 23, 2012 10:31 AM CDT

A company that you've probably never heard of has released an infographic that shows the radiation output for five different phones. The higher the output, the worse it is for your health. The FCC has a limit of 1.6W/kg and the iPhone 4S isn't too far away from that number. On the other hand, the Galaxy SIII does considerably better.

The company in question is Tawkon, a company that released an app on iOS and Android which shows how much radiation your phone is emitting. Apple, of course, quickly removed the app since it didn't make the iPhone look very good. The app is still available on the Google Play store if you would like to check out your device.

According to the infographic, the BlackBerry Bold is one of the worst phones you can buy, in terms of radiation, as it is the closest to the legal limit imposed by the FCC. The iPhone 4S comes in second with a SAR rating of 1.11W/kg. The Samsung Galaxy S3, however, comes in with only .34W/kg, more than three times less than the iPhone 4S. If you prefer to keep your brains raw, you might want to rethink your phone choice.

Samsung hits the 10 million sales mark with Galaxy S III

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Jul 23, 2012 3:29 AM CDT

Executives speaking to the Yonhap news agency, it looks as though Samsung have smashed through the 10 million sales milestone. The company talked about hitting the milestone by the end of July, and well, they've done it.

Samsung's head of mobile, J.K. Shin, said "It appears that it (accumulated sales) has exceeded 10 million units". But, and there's always a but, Shin didn't specify whether this 10 million unit count was actual sales to customers, or shipments to retailers. Either way, it's an achievement in itself.

The Samsung Galaxy S III has been available for a little over two months, and can now be purchased in over 140 countries across the world.
