AMD Gives RV870 Its Codename

Zac O'Vadka | | Jun 2, 2009 4:27 AM CDT

AMD has finally given us a codename to call their upcomming DirectX 11 GPU, and a mildly comical story to go with it as well.

AMD Gives RV870 Its Codename

Two years ago, when AMD and ATI were still getting used to being one, AMD and ATI engineers were gathering after a day at Computex 2007 drinking some beer and started brainstorming ideas. They wanted to do something unconventional. The RV870 card actually got its name from the Evergreen Hotel in Taiwan, due to the free transfers that the hotel offers to and from the Taipei Tayouan Airport.

Cameron Wilmot | | Jun 2, 2009 3:46 AM CDT

Computex Taipei 2009: It was evident after meeting with Corsair for only a short while today at their Computex suite that the once memory only company is really spreading its wings and diversifying into new markets with a mix of new products which move far away from PC memory and power supplies.

Besides the new, fancy CPU cooler we have already wrote about, Corsair was also showing off its upcoming Obsidian Series 800D high-performance full tower chassis, which was also launched officially today after seeing refinements over the past few months.

Robert from Corsair was kind to give us a hands-on look at the case in all its glory. This impressive case will end up setting you back a massive $300 USD when it hits the shelves later in the year.

NVIDIA Tegra mobile devices whip Atom - supposedly

Cameron Wilmot | | Jun 2, 2009 3:28 AM CDT

During NVIDIA's upbeat press conference today, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced Tegra to the world and this time we actually saw working product, unlike last year.

NVIDIA Tegra mobile devices whip Atom - supposedly

One slide (below) which got our interest was the comparison between Tegra, Atom and Snapdragon. If the numbers run by NVIDIA are correct, a Tegra mobile device which can go for as low as $99 USD will beat an Atom based product which starts quite a bit higher, in almost every aspect.

GIGABYTE details new Smart 6 software and DES2

Cameron Johnson | Software & Apps | Jun 2, 2009 1:41 AM CDT

Computex Taipei 2009: Now that GIGABYTE has its next generation of boards heading to the market it's time to upgrade the software that the company comp compliments its boards with.

The first big thing we saw at the 101 suite was Smart 6. This software is a Windows GUI that gives you the ability to store certain information within the DUAL BIOS chipset. What this gives you is the ability to store passwords as well as monitor system access from a BIOS level which doesn't depend on the OS. If your Windows install dies, you can still recover this data from the BIOS itself once Windows is back onine.
