Introduction

Word has been floating around the big cyber town we call the internet that the new WHQL drivers were going to give some much needed performance increases to the just launched GTX 200 series of cards.

We figured that graphs speak louder than words, so today we took the time to test the new drivers under XP and Vista across a range of benchmarks on our ZOTAC GTX 280. I've decided that although there are new Catalyst drivers available for me to test, people would be more excited to see what NVIDIA can do to (hopefully) squeeze more performance out of the GTX 200 cards. I'm in anticipation of seeing some nice increases today, as I'm sure everyone else reading this is too. We will have our latest Catalyst performance article online within the next couple days.

While a lot of sites have loved the GTX 200 series of cards, they don't seem to completely understand what's going on in the AMD camp. I can honestly say that NVIDIA need the GTX 280 to get a speed bump, or gamers may be flocking to AMD for their graphics card sooner rather than later.

It's not rocket science; above this line we have our test system, and below we have our benchmarks. Let's just get into it.

3DMark06

3DMark06 is the very latest version of the "Gamers Benchmark" from FutureMark. The newest version of 3DMark expands on the tests in 3DMark05 by adding graphical effects using Shader Model 3.0 and HDR (High Dynamic Range lighting) which will push even the best DX9 graphics cards to the extremes.

3DMark06 also focuses on not just the GPU but the CPU using the AGEIA PhysX software physics library to effectively test single and Dual Core processors.

Straight off the bat we can't find any increases across the board between the two drivers.

3DMark Vantage is the new industry standard PC gaming performance benchmark from Futuremark, newly designed for Windows Vista and DirectX10. It includes two new graphics tests, two new CPU tests, several new feature tests, and support for the latest hardware.

3DMark Vantage is based on a completely new rendering engine, developed specifically to take full advantage of DirectX10, the new graphics API from Microsoft.

Getting a bit more intensive, we can see again there are no performance increases to be found.

Benchmarks - PT Boats: Knights of the Sea

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea

Version and / or Patch Used: Benchmark Demo

Product Homepage: http://www.pt-boats.net/

PT Boats: Knights of the Sea is a naval action simulator that places gamers in charge of a mosquito fleet of the Allied Forces, Russia or Germany during the height of World War II.

Using the latest Direct X 10 technology PT Boards - Knights of the Sea manages to apply a lot of stress to the components of today which in turn gives us quite an intensive benchmark.

Apart from a little fluctuation at 1920 x 1200, we don't really have any performance difference between the two driver sets.

Benchmarks - CINEBENCH R10

CINEBENCH R10

Version and / or Patch Used: Release 10
Developer Homepage: http://www.maxon.net/
Product Homepage: http://www.maxon.net

CINEBENCH is a real-world test suite that assesses your computer's performace capabilities. MAXON CINEBENCH is based on MAXON's award-winning animation software, CINEMA 4D, which is used extensively by studios and production houses worldwide for 3D content creation. MAXON software has been used in blockbuster movies such as Spider-Man, Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia and many more.

MAXON CINEBENCH runs several tests on your computer to measure the performance of the main processor and the graphics card under real world circumstances. The benchmark application makes use of up to 16 CPUs or CPU cores and is available for Windows (32-bit and 64-Bit) and Macintosh (PPC and Intel-based).

Checking out our final synthetic benchmark in Vista, we can see the new drivers are doing nothing for CINEBENCH performance here.

Benchmarks - World in Conflict

World in Conflict

Version and / or Patch Used: 1.0.0.5
Timedemo or Level Used: Built-in Test
Developer Homepage: http://www.massive.se
Product Homepage: http://www.worldinconflict.com

World in Conflict is a real-time strategy video game by Massive Entertainment and to be published by Sierra Entertainment for Windows (DX9 and DX10) and the Xbox 360.

The game is set in 1989 where economic troubles cripple the Soviet Union and threaten to dissolve it. However, the title pursues a "what if" scenario where, in this case, the Soviet Union does not collapse and instead pursues a course of war to remain in power. It is an intensive new game is sure to put plenty of stress on even the latest graphics cards and we use the built-in benchmarking for our testing.

Looking at WIC, we have a little bit of movement with an FPS up here, an FPS down there; on a whole nothing that's going to change our opinion massively on the card.

Benchmarks - Crysis

Crysis

Version and / or Patch Used: 1.2

From the makers of Far Cry, Crysis offers FPS fans the best-looking, most highly-evolving gameplay, requiring the player to use adaptive tactics and total customization of weapons and armor to survive in dynamic, hostile environments including Zero-G.

Real time editing, bump mapping, dynamic lights, network system, integrated physics system, shaders, shadows and a dynamic music system are just some of the state of-the-art features the CryENGINE™ 2 offers. The CryENGINE™ 2 comes complete with all of its internal tools and also includes the CryENGINE™ 2 Sandbox world editing system.

We see a little movement north in Crysis at the higher resolutions, but nothing to get excited about.

Benchmarks - Unreal Tournament 3

Unreal Tournament 3

Following the formulae that made Unreal Tournament so great the third installment to the series has hit us recently with better than ever graphics. The games uses the latest Unreal Engine which like most modern day games when maxed out puts the pressure on our lineup of graphics cards.

We have a bit of weird fluctuation going on in UT3; with these larger numbers any movement doesn't really affect our game experience though.

Benchmarks - High Quality AA and AF

Our high quality tests let us separate the men from the boys and the ladies from the girls. If the cards weren't struggling before they will start to now.

3DMark06

Cranking up the AA and AF doesn't give the new drivers a chance to shine under 3DMark06.

World In Conflict

The same is seen in WIC with practically the same score.

Onto XP; the new drivers actually seem to be slightly down at all resolutions.

XP's CINEBENCH performance again finds the two drivers performing very close to each other.

Final Thoughts

Well, that wasn't anywhere near as exciting as I had hoped. Spec wise, it seemed extremely possible that we could expect an increase in performance from the GTX 280, but clearly that didn't happen. I don't doubt for a second over the coming months NVIDIA will release new drivers that increase the performance of the new GTX 200 series of cards, but this isn't it.

We will be keeping up with the performance of the GTX 280 and the driver development over the coming months to see what NVIDIA pull out of the hat. While I would normally write some long winded final thoughts about the drivers, I'm going to wrap it up quickly because I just got word that the NDA for the HD 4850 has been bought forward.

So let's wrap this up nice and quick. The GTX 280 is still disappointing me and I'm mega excited about the HD 4850. The End! - Look out for our HD 4850 content in the coming hours!
