The big mean fish - Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 HDD - Benchmarks - HL2 Level Loading and MP3 Encoding

Seagate has just launched their brand new Barracuda 7200.8 hard disk drive for the consumer desktop market which promises to offer blazing fast performance. In this review of the new drive we compare the new 7200.8 against the older generation Barracuda 7200.7 as well as the Western Digital Raptor. In the wild you wouldn't expect a Raptor to be scared of a Barracuda but the food chain just might have made a bit of a change in favour of the big mean tropical fish.

By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors even the emotions of both friends and enemies.

Here we manually time (with a stop watch) level loading using the Water Hazard map - with minus .25 seconds on all our results due to human delay. The new 7200.8 with NCQ enabled is able to provide a clear 1 second advantage over the Raptor while the older 7200.7 is two and a half seconds slower or over 10% slower to put into prospective.

MP3 Encoding

Using a program called CD to MP3 Ripper (v1.50), we timed how long it would take to convert our retail copy of "50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin'" from CDA to MP3 format using the bit rate size of 128kbit for the entire album. Obviously lower is better.

Given our previous results, we can probably assume MP3 encoding performance demands more from the CPU and memory rather than the HDD.
