VisionTek Xtreme2 1GB USB GO Drive Review - Conclusion

Pen drives, pocket drives, Flash sticks, thumb drives... we've heard many different names for this type product but it all boils down to one thing; convenient storage. Mike has checked in with a look at the VisionTek Xtreme2 1GB USB GO Drive today. It offers impressive USB 2.0 performance over other similar drivers. How impressive? Read on and find out!

I've been a user of thumb drives for a good while now. Whether for transporting data from home to work or just storing pictures to show off to friends, the device is just handy to have around. I've also found them very useful for porting over installation files when installing Windows on a new system. Whatever your uses, the flexibility of this type of product makes life a whole lot easier.

If you happen to be like me and had thought all pocket drives were created equally, you'd better rethink that concept. I know I have. With such large differences in performance between models, it becomes another area where a bit of research should be used before you purchase. Considering the large choice of storage size ranges and the level of speed you can expect to see with this VisionTek drive, it is a simple choice to whole heartedly recommend this device for those with the need for convenient, portable storage space.

As far as pricing, you'll find ranges between US$20 and US$100 depending on what size device you need. That $100 price was for the 1GB model being tested today and comes directly from the VisionTek site, so prices are not out of line at all.

About the only downside I can see with this drive is the small switch used to write protect your data. Since it is not mounted under the surface level, it is likely it will become easy to move over time and may become accidentally disengaged without you knowing about it, especially if you use it often. This is a very minor issue, however, and does nothing to my recommendation of the device.

Bottom line... If you've been thinking about picking up a small, USB powered thumb drive, don't think that all drives are the same. With data moving at 8MB/sec and sizes available up to 1GB, the VisionTek GO Drive is certainly worthy of consideration.
