Introduction and Specifications

When I received a bunch of the Patriot Memory FUEL Active Mobile Rechargeable Battery 2,000mAh with LED Flashlights (from here on out, we're referring to it as the FUEL Active charger), I thought to myself "but, I'm not an outdoors person." Don't let this stop you, as the FUEL Active isn't just limited to the "outdoor enthusiast."

This is what Patriot is going for, as it says so on its website. The FUEL Active really is the perfect mobile battery for the outdoors, but not just that--anything that is out of the norm. If your car breaks down and you need a flashlight, the FUEL Active is perfect, and once you're finished lighting an area up, you can top up your smartphone while waiting for the tow truck.

The FUEL Active charger has 2,000mAh of charge, power pass through technology meaning that you can charge other devices while the FUEL Active is charging, and comes pre-charged, so it's ready to go out of the box.

When it comes to the box, inside of it, we have the Patriot FUEL Active charger and a micro USB to USB cable. There's not much more you need when it comes to a package this thin. All of this arrives on Amazon for $17.99, which is cheap as chips.

The Patriot FUEL Active features input power of 5V/0.5A, meaning it charges slowly, and output power of just 5V/1A. It won't charge your smartphone or tablet anywhere near as fast as competing chargers, but I don't think that's what Patriot is going for here.

Using the Patriot Memory FUEL Active Mobile Rechargeable Battery 2,000mAh with LED Flashlight

Where the Patriot FUEL Active charger really shines is in its design. It comes as a circular lipstick-style design, with its USB port and power port at the bottom and the other side of it a flashlight. The flashlight can come in quite handy for tricky-to-reach places, especially when you're in the outdoors. This is what Patriot is going for with its FUEL Active charger.

Patriot has built the FUEL Active battery inside of a high-impact, element resistant housing, so the FUEL Active charger will keep on keepin' on, even in the elements. Again, this is perfect for those who are camping or hiking, as it can sit in your backpack without the worry of it being hit, or dropped, or having water spilled on it.

We also have a one-year warranty stamped on the Patriot FUEL Active charger.

What's Hot

It's Nearly Invincible: Thanks to Patriot housing the FUEL Active in a high-impact, element-resistant housing, the charger is not scared of being out in the elements. Drop it in water? That's fine. Drop it on the ground? What ground?

Perfect For the Traveler: For someone who travels a lot, especially walking or riding a bike, the Patriot FUEL Active is a great companion.

Let There Be Light: Patriot deciding to install a flashlight in the FUEL Active is a great choice, as it makes it an even better companion for the outdoorsy people in your life... or yourself.

Four Different Colors: Not that colors really matter, but to some they do. Patriot has four colors on offer here, so there's a FUEL Active charger for everyone!

What's Not

Needs to be Amped Up to 4,000mAh+: With bigger and bigger smartphones on the market, the batteries inside of them are continuing to get larger. A 3,000mAh battery in a smartphone isn't out of the norm now, so having 2,000mAh of charge is really an emergency kind of thing. I'd like to see a 4,000mAh model in the same size or a little bigger.

Final Thoughts

There's not much to criticize here, especially at the price Patriot has slapped on the FUEL Active--just $17.99. This means you could almost buy a couple of them to take around with you.

For the traveler, or someone who is riding or walking everywhere--whether it be your mode of transportation for work or for leisure--the Patriot FUEL Active should be a charger you take notice of. For me, I have given one to my mom, who uses it to charge up her smartphone, but she loved it as it doubles as a flashlight.

The flashlight portion of the FUEL Active is the standout feature here for me. As I said above, my mom uses one and loves it, and it has come in handy more than once in my car when I've needed some light. Patriot pricing it at $17.99 doesn't hurt, either.
