Introduction and Package

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 02

Last month, we got a chance to look at the new GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB from NVIDIA and found ourselves really impressed with what the company was offering.

When you talk about dollar for dollar and FPS for FPS, the model just screams value against its main competitor, the similarly priced AMD Radeon R7 260X 2GB. While impressed with the performance of the card from an FPS stand point, we saw some room for improvement.

Out of the box, the cooler on the reference card was nothing to get excited about. If anything, it was something to be disappointed in. Of course, we knew that this was only going to be temporary and when we got our hand on retail versions of the card, this small issue would be fixed.

The other thing is we've always got room for improvement when it comes to stock clocks. Today, the MSI card we're looking at is, of course, overclocked out of the box as the "OC" label would suggest.

Outside of that, there's really not much else for us to say. We're doing exactly what we wanted today: getting the chance to look at a retail version of the new GTX 750 Ti 2GB. Let's see what MSI is able to bring to the party with its GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC offering.

Package

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 03

Taking a look at the box, we really don't see anything out of the ordinary with the overall design. The Gaming series has been around for a while now, and the black and red color scheme looks great. We can see the model clearly on the front, and, in the corner, you can see that we're dealing with an OC model as we mentioned in the introduction.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 04

Turning the box over, you can see some of the main features in more detail, including support for the Gaming APP, which brings easy overclocking via three modes. Along with that, you can see Military Class 4 support, which brings Hi-c and Solid Capacitors along with the Twin Frozr IV cooler, which we've always been a fan of. We're looking forward to seeing how it performs on the new Maxwell chip.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 05

Moving inside the package, you can see there's not a whole lot going on besides the standard User Guide and CD being present. Along with that, we've also got another piece of paper that explains the Hybrid BIOS feature that is included on the card. We'll take a closer look at that in just a moment when we move to the card.

The Card and Specifications

The Card

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 06

Taking a look at the card, you can see the Twin Frozr IV cooler that covers almost the entire PCB. The two large fans sit over a massive heat sink, and we've got some copper heat pipes throughout the card that help pull the heat off the core.

The new Maxwell chip has proven to perform well when it comes to heat, and it will be interesting to see how the numbers look with this much larger cooler.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 07

Taking a look around the card, we again don't have an extra power connector or an SLI connector. We do have a switch towards the back of the card, though, which lets us switch between two BIOSes. One mode is Hybrid, while the other is Legacy.

The Hybrid BIOS does have some computability issues, but if it does work, then you get a faster start up and resume from hibernation. Legacy, on the other hand, has no compatibility issues but is a little slower in booting up.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 08

Finishing up our look at the card, we can see the I/O side of things, which has an interesting setup. While the Dual-Link DVI-D and HDMI aren't much of a surprise, the inclusion of a D-SUB VGA connector is.

Honestly, this won't be too much of an issue for a lot of people as most will be using the DVI or the HDMI port on just a single monitor. The inclusion of a VGA connector, though, is a little weird and a bit of a blast from the past.

Specifications

As we mentioned on the first page, the MSI GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming is an OC model, and, looking below, you can see that MSI has done a pretty good job with the core. The reference clocks on the GTX 750 Ti 2GB are 1020MHz on the core and 1085MHz via boost. Looking below, you can see that MSI has pushed the default core clock to 1085MHz. The boost clock is then pushed even higher to 1163MHz.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 01

In typical fashion, you can see that the 2GB of GDDR5 memory has been left alone at 5400MHz QDR. Most companies choose to concentrate on the core as it brings with it the biggest boost in performance. The core clock is strong and should bring with it a decent performance boost.

Benchmarks - Test System Setup

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 99

We would like to thank the following companies for supplying and supporting us with our test system hardware and equipment: Intel, ASUS, and Corsair.

The main comparison we want to make with the MSI GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming is against the reference clocked card. The 78MHz overclock is decent and should bring with it a bit of added performance.

Along with that, though, we've also included the AMD R7 260X 2GB, which is the main competitor as it sits in the same price bracket along with the entry-level R9 offering, the HIS R9 270 IceQ X2 2GB.

The FPS Numbers Explained

When we benchmark our video cards and look at the graphs, we aim to get to a certain level of FPS which we consider playable. While many may argue that the human eye can't see over 24 FPS or 30 FPS, any true gamer will tell you that as we climb higher in Frames Per Seconds (FPS), the overall gameplay feels smoother. There are three numbers we're looking out for when it comes to our benchmarks.

30 FPS - It's the minimum number we aim for when it comes to games. If you're not dropping below 30 FPS during games, you're going to have a nice and smooth gaming experience. The ideal situation is that even in a heavy fire fight, the minimum stays above 30 FPS making sure that you can continue to aim easily or turn the corner with no dramas.

60 FPS - It's the average we look for when we don't have a minimum coming at us. If we're getting an average of 60 FPS, we should have a minimum of 30 FPS or better and as mentioned above, it means we've got some smooth game play happening.

120 FPS - The new number that we've been hunting down over recent months. If you're the owner of a 120 Hz monitor, to get the most out of it you want to get around the 120 FPS mark. Moving from 60 FPS / 60 Hz to 120 FPS / 120 Hz brings with it a certain fluidity that can't really be explained, but instead has to be experienced. Of course, if you're buying a 120 Hz monitor to take advantage of 3D, an average of 120 FPS in our benchmark means that in 3D you will have an average of 60 FPS, which again means you should expect some smooth gameplay.

Why are some graphs incomplete?

Adding new game benchmarks is a long, tedious and time consuming task as every video card has to be re-tested in those new benchmarks. Because of that reason we have always just evaluated our benchmark line up every six months. To stay up to date and current with the latest benchmarks and games available, we've changed our approach to adding new benchmarks.

Our benchmark line up will progress and be updated as newer more intensive games with benchmarks comes to light. While this will mean that initially you may only see a single video card in those particular graphs, as the weeks go on and we test more and more video cards, the results will grow quickly. This will help keep our benchmark line up as up to date as possible as we introduce and remove games on a constant basis.

Lost Planet 2 is a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the sequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, which is also made by Capcom. It takes place ten years after the events of the first game on the same fictional planet. The snow has melted to reveal jungles and more tropical areas that have taken the place of more frozen regions. The plot begins with mercenaries fighting against jungle pirates. After destroying a mine, the mercenaries continue on to evacuate the area, after which a Category-G Akrid appears and attacks them. After being rescued, they find out their evacuation point (Where the Category-G appeared) was a set-up and no pick up team awaited them. The last words imply possible DLC additions to the game: "There's nothing to be gained by wiping out snow pirates...unless you had some kind of grudge."

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 24

Lost Planet 2 sees a bit of a bump across the board, and, at 1920 x 1200, you can see we've got a bit more breathing room as our average moves from 64 FPS to 69 FPS. While we manage to get a couple more FPS at 2560 x 1600, you can see our performance on a whole continues to be too low with a 46 FPS average.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 25

Just Cause 2 performance is again strong, and you can see we've got a slight performance increase at all resolutions. You can see the added MHz on the core helps give us a bit more breathing room like we saw under Lost Planet 2. At 1920 x 1200, you can see the extra FPS helps take us out of the 60 FPS range and into the 70 FPS one.

Battlefield 4 sees a nice little bump in FPS, and 1920 x 1200 and 1680 x 1050 offers us some great numbers that are very playable.

While we manage to see a nice little bump at 2560 x 1600, we're still a little off where we need our numbers to be.

High Quality AA and AF

While we test all our games with maximum in-game settings, turning on Anti-Aliasing (AA) and Antistrophic Filtering (AF) helps take the intensity of our testing to another level.

Here we see video cards go from playable FPS to unplayable FPS and the real power houses continue to help break that 60 FPS mark we always aim for to provide a smooth gaming experience.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 36

Turning on AA and AF, it comes as no surprise that our numbers are extremely low. We see an extra FPS at both resolutions, but we're way off the numbers we need to be.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 37

Just Cause 2 sees a nice little increase as you'd expect, and the move to 54 FPS from 51 FPS at 1920 x 1200 is great. We're still not quite where we need to be, though, as we fall short of that 60 FPS number we're always-on the hunt for.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 38

Sleeping Dogs performance, like Metro Last Light, is extremely low with just 22 FPS being seen at 1920 x 1200.

Temperature Test

The temperature of the core is pulled from MSI Afterburner with the max reading used after a completed run of 3DMark Vantage at the Performance preset.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 50

Temperature numbers on the card are amazing.

You can see both the idle and the load are extremely low. It really sits much lower than any of the new generation cards from AMD and NVIDIA. It will be fantastic to see what happens when we get higher-end Maxwell chips.

Sound Test

Pulling out the TES 1350A Sound Level Meter, we find ourselves quickly yelling into the top of it to see how loud we can be.

After five minutes of that, we get a bit more serious and place the device two CM away from the fan on the card to find the maximum noise level of the card when idle (2D mode) and in load (3D mode).

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 51

It's also awesome to see that those low temperature number aren't coming at the cost of high noise levels. The card is near silent when running.

Maxwell and the Twin Frozr IV combination is a clear winner.

Power Consumption Test

Using our PROVA Power Analyzer WM-01--or "Power Thingy" as it has quickly become known as to our readers--we are now able to find out what kind of power is being used by our test system and the associated video cards installed. Keep in mind that it tests the complete system (minus LCD monitor, which is plugged directly into AC wall socket).

There are a few important notes to remember, though. While our maximum power is taken in 3DMark06 at the same exact point, we have seen in particular tests the power being drawn as much as 10 percent more. We test at the exact same stage every time, so tests should be very consistent and accurate.

The other thing to remember is that our test system is bare minimum--only an SSD hard drive is used with a single CD ROM and minimal cooling fans.

So while the system might draw 400 watts in our test system, placing it into your own PC with a number of other items will result in a higher draw.

MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Video Card Review 52

Finishing off with power draw, you can see again the numbers are fantastic with just over 300 watts being used.

The new generation of cards from both AMD and NVIDIA really shine when it comes to power draw.

Pricing, Availability, and Final Thoughts

When it comes to pricing, the MSI variant of the GTX 750 Ti 2GB is going to set you back roughly $10 - $20 more than the SRP of the card. Considering the quality of the cooler, this is really a price increase we don't have a trouble swallowing. The Twin Frozr IV cooler has always done a good job of impressing us.

Here, though, it really shines for multiple reasons. The first is that the Twin Frozr IV is not only a capable cooler that we see a lot, but it's one we see on models that are higher-end then the GTX 750 Ti. Combined with the fact that the cooler is capable on higher-end models with the fact that the new Maxwell chipset runs cooler in general, you end up with a card that runs at extremely low heat and noise levels.

As for the performance of the model, we found ourselves impressed with what NVIDIA was offering with the reference card. Throw in the overclock MSI has offered and this amazing cooler, and you just have a fantastic card that sits in that mid $100 price bracket.

There's no doubt even more fun is to be had with the model via MSI Afterburner. Overclocking the model, you could indeed extend the performance of the model even further. Even if it ran warmer and louder, the numbers would still be significantly lower than so many other cards on the market.

As for the bundle, there's not much going on at all. Apart from a bit of paperwork and a Driver CD, you can see that there's nothing else being offered. We're not too surprised, and really we've got everything that we need.

While the card on a whole sits a bit bigger than the reference card due to the size of the cooler, if that's not a problem, we'd recommend this card in a heartbeat for anyone wanting to spend this kind of money. If noise levels are important to you, this is about the closest thing you will get to a near silent card while still having active cooling. The chances are that the fans in the other part of your system are going to be louder.
