LaCie 5big NAS Pro Review - Benchmarks - 4 HDD / RAID 6 and Single Client Wrap-up

LaCie 5big NAS Pro Review
Today LaCie gives existing customers a 25% write performance increase and those looking for a quality NAS something to think about. New software features round out the updated NAS 3.0 software, but the 5big stood on solid ground before it.

Benchmarks - 4 HDD / RAID 6

RAID 6: Extend RAID 5 by adding an additional parity block; thus it uses block-level striping with two parity blocks distributed across all member disks.

Single Client Performance Wrap-up

In nearly every chart the LaCie 5big NAS Pro led our group of similar NAS appliances with 4 to 7 bays. The 5big NAS Pro worked exceptionally well in RAID 5 and RAID 6 especially when writing data. The only place where we observed low performance was in mixed mode reads and writes at the same time.

Most users will run this product in RAID 5 and it appears LaCie tuned the NAS for exceptional performance with that redundant array. Our 5big NAS Pro shipped in RAID 5 through the SimplyRAID configuration and I suspect most users will opt to keep the factory settings. That means right out of the box, the 5big NAS Pro delivers the best results, without any user input.
