Author: Shane Baxtor SUMMARY: Mousing surfaces are probably the most under looked type of product when it comes to computing these days. Introduction

With the introduction of the optical mouse a few years ago, people have lived with the belief that they didn’t have to rely so much on the use of a mouse pad to have high responsiveness. When you mention a mouse pad to people these days the most common response is “I don’t need one, I use an optical mouse”. This was the exact same response I used when I was asked about mouse pads, it wasn’t that I didn’t like them; it was more the additional costs involved. The fact is that I couldn’t justify spending $40 on something when I felt my desk could do the job just as well.

I have played around with many a mouse and mouse pad in my time. The IntelliMouse from Microsoft (versions 1 & 3), the Logitech Ball and Optical mouse, and even the cheaper A4Tech mouse have all gained intimate knowledge of the contours of my right palm. Mouse pads from Everglide, 3M, and RatPadz have all helped to convey that knowledge to my PC and, in my opinion, the best combination was a Microsoft Explorer 3 and RatPadz.

This was up to the other day, anyway, when I received a Surface 1030 from Webber4 Technologies in Perth, Western Australia. When you look on the net the first thing you notice is the price tag of $AU60 for us who live in Australia. If you are fortunate to live in the United States they can be purchased for $US19.99 which is obviously a lot more attractive.

Here is a little information about fUnc Industries from their website: “fUnc Industries was founded in August, 1999 to develop and manufacture specialized accessories for the professional computer user. The sUrface1030 is the first product to be released in the line of mousing sUrface products from the company. Please stay tuned to the web site for further company developments and announcements.”

Should the Surface 1030 fUnc Pad really be considered? Read on and find out!
