Introduction

We've been throwing a lot of heavy hitters and quality power supplies on the test equipment lately. Some have proven to be quite worthy while others haven't quite been up to par. Thermaltake wants a crack at our testing methodology and it promises to be a grand encounter.

This time around we are putting one of their finest power supplies under the scope to see if it is all it is cracked up to be on paper. The Toughpower Grand PSUs are touted as providing excellent voltage regulation and pure aesthetics. It is almost impossible to find a unit that can deliver on both ends as sacrifices are always made here and there. Perhaps Thermaltake can pull it off with the TPG-750.

Thermaltake provides a single 12V rail capable of outputting 60A of continuous power to feed power hungry systems. The single 12V rail isn't anything new as many manufacturers are moving away from multi-rail PSU's. This eliminates the need to load balance the power supply and simplifies installation.

The TPG-750M comes in swinging with a $179.99 price over at Newegg right now, but can be had for less with a little bit of shopping. For your hard earned loot, Thermaltake packs the power supply full of all the features that we've come to expect from top-tier manufacturers including all the power protections you can shake a stick at, the much desired 50C and 80 Plus Gold ratings, and low noise output all bundled up to be aesthetically pleasing.

Thermaltake goes a step beyond and offers an unusually high 7-year warranty with the TPG-750M. They obviously have a lot of faith in their engineering and expect it to last longer than the rest of the rig that it gets used with.

The front of the box is simple, yet eye catching to draw you in. There isn't a bunch of marketing thrown at you and you get a good view of the power supply itself.

Just when you think you're safe from the endless amounts of marketing, you notice that the front of the box flips up and then BAM! They hit you with everything they've got. At least it is useful information for those that are checking it out on a store shelf.

The back contains the rest of the pertinent information including output specifications, connector availability and cable length. The sides of the box only display Thermaltake and Toughpower logos.

Taking a look inside the box shows a well packed power supply that is quite protected. Yes, that is a 90 page user manual sitting on top of everything. Don't fret; it's only 9 pages in 10 different languages.

Pulling things out of the box, we see that Thermaltake has given the TPG-750M the grand treatment. Not only do the modular cables get their own bag, but the accessories and power supply come in their own felt bag, too.

To keep the aesthetics of the PSU as clean as can be, Thermaltake has the output specification, QC and serial number labels on the top where they will be hidden once installed.

On the back we see the push button on/off switch that illuminates to indicate if the power supply is functional or not. The Thermaltake logo in the middle illuminates once the TPG-750M turns on.

The front houses the connections from the modular cables. These are labeled clearly and color coded.

The bottom shows the flower petal intake fan. Thermaltake has opted for a honeycomb fan grill on the bottom instead of the usual wire grill.

On top of the usual mess of cables that we see, Thermaltake includes a few adapters with the TPG-750M. There are two 8-pin to 6-pin PCI-E adapter cables. This is because two of the included modular PCI-E cables are not 6+2 pin cables but are fixed 8-pin cables. There is also a six inch ATX 4-pin extension cable in the event that it is needed.

Rail distribution is as simple as it gets here. There is a single 12V rail that feeds everything.

A Look Inside

A little extra care was required in opening up the TPG-750M due to the colored sticker that runs around the circumference of the power supply. After getting inside we can see a trio of heatsinks that keep everything cooled down.

The TPG-750M features 105C Nippon Chemi-Con capacitors through the entire power supply in both electrolytic and solid state forms.

Something that we don't normally get to see inside the power supply is the use of reflective shielding to direct excess heat away from specific areas of the power supply.

Test Results and Final Thoughts


Test Results

Our load tests utilize a couple of FAST ATE active load testers and a variety of other equipment such as an oscilloscope, power conditioner, temperature probe and a power consumption meter. You can read more about our standard testing approach here.

The tests performed are based around six conceivable setups that are out there and progressively load down the PSU up to the power supply's limits or 1000W, whichever comes first. Since our test equipment's limits are greater than the Thermaltake TPG-750M, we can test it to the maximum.

The performance shown by the TPG-750M is almost pure perfection. It comes extremely close to reaching voltage regulation within 1% across the board and does so on the 12V rail. Checking the 12V rail with the oscilloscope shows very low ripple as well, reaching a maximum of 20mv under full load. Topping everything off is the excellent efficiency shown, proving that it is deserving of its 80 Plus Gold rating.


Final Thoughts

What is there to say about the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 750W modular power supply that it doesn't say for itself? It is stunning to look at, boasts quality inside and out, and performs on a nearly flawless level. Of the top notch power supplies that we've had a look at lately, the TPG-750M outperforms them all.

There is a small price premium for the TPG-750M, but excellence rarely comes without a cost. While power supplies in the similar output range as the Toughpower Grand might cost a little less, it will be nearly impossible to find one that performs as well. At least Thermaltake packs the box full of goodies and backs your purchase for a whopping 7 full years.
