Introduction

DDR3 memory is making its way into mainstream PCs thanks to the G33 chipset’s dual memory controller abilities with integrated graphics, taking the budget and workstation environments to a tee. P35 with its dual band memory controller also helps with the integration of DDR3 into the mainstream sector, and its Crossfire support also gives it a leg up on other Intel chipsets on the market. X38 and X48 chipsets round out the enthusiast market with DDR3 support, we are seeing a big splash into the DDR3 Ocean.

While the chipsets we mentioned above all have DDR3 support, they also have DDR2 controllers built into them; Intel has not forgotten the memory standard that put them on the road to victory. Core 2 and DDR2 managed to pull Intel out of the gutter and bring them to the top dog, and DDR2 still isn’t finished yet. All of the current AM2 and AM2+ boards are DDR2 based, so we won’t see any removal of DDR2 for the time being, and while DDR3 prices are coming down DDR2 is still the more economical choice, especially for those not wanting to blow a huge amount on their PCs.

With today’s treat we have a new kit from OCZ memory, who as you know are one of the biggest sellers of overclockers memory on the retail market. OCZ has prided themselves on overclocking memory to its extreme limits and have done a great job at not only reaching the limits, but pushing them with innovative cooling ideas.

We have been given a new PC2-6400 ReaperX kit with OCZ’s innovative Reaper Extreme Cooling, These modules are set to hit extreme levels of overclocking; how do they fair? Let’s have a closer look.
