Rosewill RX353-S 3.5" SATA to USB/e.SATA External Enclosure - Final Thoughts

External hard drive enclosures are not a new thing but these types of toys with support for SATA drives certainly is!

Final Thoughts

After spending some time with the Rosewill SATA External Enclosure, I am impressed with its performance. USB speeds are exactly where I would have thought they should be and e.SATA speeds showed no overhead to slow down data transfers. Through a series of three different tests we saw consistent speeds and no areas where problems cropped up.

I did have one concern about the vertical stand, however. This thing is pretty loose and I can see a small bump sending the unit out of the stand and thumping to the ground or desktop. If you have some thin rubber material I would recommend putting it into the stand to give a tighter fit. This may not be an issue for those who will sit the enclosure in a corner out of the way, but it could be an important factor for others.

We spent a good deal of time talking about performance, but what about the value aspect that Rosewill holds in such high esteem? MSRP for this device is US$39.99, which is about $5.00 cheaper than the MSRP of other e.SATA devices that come with an external PC bracket. With a little looking you won't pay much over about $30 for this product, and likely even less as time goes on.

Bottom line... If you are looking for some more storage space and either don't have room for more drives or are afraid of voiding the warranty of your factory PC, external storage is the answer. The Rosewill RX353-S allows you to make use of SATA drives with excellent results, even for those who don't have a modern motherboard that supports this technology. With price and performance traveling this close together, it is hard not to like this enclosure!
