The Quest for Green computing - Australia's top PC builders come together to build Australia's Green PC.
Competition winner is education and government supplier, EDsys IT.
Sydney Australia - August 05 2008 - Western Digital and GIGABYTE UNITED INC, two worldwide technology leaders, jointly launched a competition in May 2008 designed to rally Australia's local PC assemblers to build a Green PC, with a Toyota Prius hybrid car as the Grand Prize. Western Digital and GIGABYTE UNITED have been championing their respective eco-friendly technologies and products to help reduce energy waste in PCs: GreenPowerTM technology from WD and the Dynamic Energy Saver technology in GIGABYTE motherboards.
The quest to unearth Australia's Green PC was a huge success, with the companies receiving over 50 entrants from retailers and system integrators Australia-wide. The top 9 finalists were chosen by an independent judging panel, which tested all the PC systems on performance and electricity consumption.
Western Australian-based EDsys IT was announced as the winner. "It was obvious that EDsys IT spent a lot of time thinking about the configuration of their system, and how to choose the right components to produce an efficient balance of PC power savings and performance. The team that put the system together deserves a huge pat on the back, as the understanding of power saving technologies, both software and hardware, really shined in the submission." Explains Nick Race, competition judge and Technical Editor for Australian Personal Computer Magazine. "EDsys IT is also working toward ISO14001 environmental management standard compliance, which guides them to continually monitor and improve the effects of their company and products have on the environment. In addition, EDsys IT has undertaken an initiative to offset carbon emissions for the system they ship whereby the company will plant two native trees for each system they sell."
EDsys IT Computers General Manager Greg McDougall said, "We are thrilled to win this award - it has been a long-standing policy at EDsys IT to re-use and recycle. Our industry as a whole generates an enormous amount of waste and it is up to all of us to take a proactive role in doing what we can to reduce our environmental impact." EDsys IT has now won the Grand Prize Toyota Prius Hybrid Car as a replacement to one of their fleet vehicles in an effort to further reduce their environmental impact.
Shirley Koh, Marketing Manager from Western Digital also delivered an address to the audience and the finalists during the Green PC awards evening, "In addition to working to help the industry understand our GreenPower technology and green products, the main message to deliver is: Plan for your next generation. With great emphasis on going green all over the world, we believe that computing systems that consume less power and contribute to our environment is a trend that will continue well into the future. It's time to tell the Australian public that green computing technology is here and that power and cost savings in such systems is possible without impacting performance."
"GIGABYTE invests heavily in green IT research and development for our motherboard and other products. After this Green PC campaign we hope that Australia's resellers benefit from our R&D and add value to their products by putting a GIGABYTE Dynamic Energy Saver sticker on their systems," says Alan Chen, Managing Director of GIGABYTE Australia. "We want our valued customers to become part of the green trend in technology as well as ease the environmental concerns of the wider Australian public."
"It is inspiring to see Western Digital and GIGABYTE's commitment to working with the industry to find the greenest computer dealer". "Having these vendors provide a forum to encourage PC dealers to develop more efficient PC's is what is going to assist Australia in reducing the carbon footprint." Explains Mark Winter the founder of "Computers Off Australia" Campaign. ""We certainly support these type of initiatives from vendors and encourage all PC dealers to enter these type of competitions going forward."
The Green PC competition invited all Australian-based PC builders, serving all sectors in education, government, corporate and home computing, to participate. The competition set minimum criteria for Green PC configuration, and were judged based on the effective balance of performance and energy efficiency. The top finalists were:

Enspire Digital from New South Wales
