Apple's OS X Lion has reached "Golden Master" status - possible WWDC timed release?

By: Array

Roughly a month ago Apple unveiled the developer preview of their upcoming OS X Lion. It appears Apple have been hard at work and have ironed out the bugs with their Mac App Store distribution.

Apple are reportedly getting ready to deploy an OS X Lion update to developers that they may be calling a "GM1" release. "GM" stands for "Golden Master" and is a name that gets given to software that is complete. Could Lion be nearly ready? Maybe, maybe not.

Firefox 4 Is Out: Join The Party

By: Array

TweakTown image news/1/9/19171_45_firefox_4_is_out_join_the_party.jpg

You probably saw it on our Download of the Day, but just in case you were suspicious of what 9 million users and counting have confidently downloaded, here are some initial observations from using Firefox 4 all day today to write the last few posts.

Upon downloading, I was greeted with a wonderfully and aesthetically pleasing tutorial set-up (not that I really needed it, I just watched it because I was curious). If you're just now getting on the Firefox Train (like, if you were born in the late 1990's), it's a helpful introduction. You can also totally join the party by being part of Mozilla's Twitter Party feature, in which your Twitter Avatar is somehow algorithm'd into a pixellated version of their well-known browser logo. There's even a nifty search function once you've tweeted the #fx4 hashtag to see your tweet amongst the 67,000 others.

What I've Noticed So Far

Overall, very pleased. I used to use Firefox (and I still do for some sites)

Download of the Day: Firefox 4.0

By: Array

Our Download of the Day today is Firefox 4.0.

The Web is all about innovation, and Firefox sets the pace with dozens of new features to deliver a faster, more secure and customizable Web browsing experience for all.

User Experience. The enhancements to Firefox provide the best possible browsing experience on the Web. The new Firefox smart location bar, affectionately known as the "Awesome Bar," learns as people use it, adapting to user preferences and offering better fitting matches over time.

Performance. Firefox is built on top of the powerful new Gecko platform, resulting in a safer, easier to use and more personal product.

Security. Firefox raises the bar for security. The new malware and phishing protection helps protect from viruses, worms, trojans and spyware to keep people safe on the Web.

Customization. Everyone uses the Web differently, and Firefox lets users customize their browser with more than 5,000 add-ons.

Google Chrome 11 beta out, includes voice input

By: Array

Google decided to not let Mozilla have the limelight today with their release of Firefox 4, so they've updated Chrome to Chrome 11. The Chrome 11 beta includes the new icon as shown below but that is not all. There is added support for the HTML5 speech input API.

TweakTown image news/1/9/19162_139_google_chrome_11_beta_out_includes_voice_input.jpg

This means you'll be able to talk to your computer (obviously via a microphone) and Chrome can interpret it. This is something very similar to what is on Google Android-based devices and it's great to use. It's also HTML5 spec, meaning any developer will be able to take advantage of it, not just Google.

Download of the Day: SpeedFan 4.43

By: Array

Our Download of the Day today is SpeedFan 4.43.

SpeedFan is a program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info and show hard disk temperatures.

SpeedFan supports SCSI disks too. SpeedFan can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature).

SpeedFan can access digital temperature sensors and can change fan speeds accordingly, thus reducing noise.

SpeedFan can find almost any hardware monitor chip connected to the 2-wire SMBus (System Management Bus (trademark belonging to SMIF, Inc.), a subset of the I2C protocol) and works fine with Windows 9x, ME, NT, 2000, 2003, XP and Windows Vista. It works with Windows 64 bit too.

SpeedFan can handle:

• almost any number of South Bridges

• almost any number of hardware monitor chips

• almost any number of hard disks

• almost any number of temperature readings

• almost any number of voltage readings

• almost any number of fan speed readings

• almost any number of PWMs
