Google updates Google Tasker, version 7 is cleaner, fresher, faster

By: Array

Google have today released the latest version of Google Taskbar for Internet Explorer. It includes a fresh, clean look that "personalizes Toolbar with the tools you use most". Another addition is Toolbar instant, if you've used Instant on google.com or in Google Chrome - you'll find yourself loving Toolbar Instant. Just start typing in the search box and search predictions and results will appear instantly as you type, getting the results you want, faster.

If you want to access the Toolbar quicker, press Alt+G. To enable Toolbar Instant, visit Toolbar Options and click "Enable Instant for faster searching and browsing." Toolbar Instant works on both IE8 and IE9, if you're using an older browser you can either upgrade to a newer version of Internet Explorer or try Google Chrome.

Google Now Allows Map Maker User Edits: Let The Borgesian Experiment Begin!

By: Array

TweakTown image news/1/9/19435_001_google_now_allows_map_maker_user_edits_let_the_borgesian_experiment_begin.jpg

Google's 3-year-old Map Maker project, as of today, allows users to create points of interest in the United States and edit them as they see fit. Well, pending Google's eventual (and not guaranteed) approval. Why the three year wait? Evidently Google began its editing program in smaller areas of the world that necessitated detailed maps, experimenting to see if their infrastructure could cope with what would be, and will be, an extremely persistent and massive amount of traffic once it would be implemented in the US. With the potential of millions of unique views a day, someone has to ensure that thousands of Clownfart Daycare Centers don't just start popping up all over the bible belt (and that's giving most Americans the benefit of the doubt).

The editing process is pretty straightforward: anybody with a Google account can sign in, add a map POI with all of the corresponding information, and even draw a structure or addition to an existing point. For example, if someone were to make a large change to their house, like adding a wing or a helipad or something, you could draw that in. Google has made it so that edits are approved or denied and added to Google Maps (including Street View) within seconds- a pretty impressive feature considering the amount of editing requests that will start pouring in.

I'm sure people will complain about censorship at some point...

Windows 8: Task Manager screenshot leaked

By: Array

A screenshot of the new Task Manager for Windows 8 has been leaked from Windows 8 build 7850. The new Task Manager is obviously not fully functional at this early stage in the Windows 8 game but we can still tell from the leaked screenshot that is is far different to the previous Task Managers in Windows 7, Vista and XP.

TweakTown image news/1/9/19421_1_windows_8_task_manager_screenshot_leaked.jpg

There are now three tabs: Programs, Startup and Users (compared to current Task Managers which are made up of Applications, Processes, Performance and Networking). This is probably set to change but for now it's great to see Microsoft changing up the Task Manager with a new fresh look.

Windows 8: "Portable Workspace" feature, lets you take work with you

By: Array

Being able to run Windows on a flash drive has been the dream of many Microsoft loving fans, myself included. Microsoft is finally saying "yes" to those fans by including "Portable Workspace" in Windows 8. It enables a 16GB (or greater) external storage device and put a bootable, runnable copy of Windows 8 on there.

We don't know the exact details of the feature, whether it's a full install, a ghost-image, or if it can be done multiple times - but the feature is there. We'll keep you posted and as details leak and we find more, we'll continue to Windows 8 feature posts. Question, wouldn't this be a great feature for an Apple-based machine? Plugging in a USB stick with Windows 8 on it - somehow works through Boot Camp (or if it boots from itself). Ooooh the possibilities.

Windows 8: "Hybrid Boot" feature

By: Array

So much Windows 8 news is coming through that from today onward any Windows 8 news gets it's own little "Windows 8:" introduction. Windows 8 news is coming in at a steady pace now that the beta versions are jumping quickly and today is no exception, there's a new feature in Windows 8 that is set to replace the OS's default shutdown behaviour so that the boot up process can be sped up.

TweakTown image news/1/9/19412_1_windows_8_hybrid_boot_feature.jpg

"Hybrid Boot" uses advanced hibernation functionality when the computer is shut down (instead of actually shutting it down) and allows the machine to start up quicker. The feature can be found by typing "power button" into the start menu and then clicking "Change settings that are currently unavailable".

Download of the Day: Defraggler 2.04.297

By: Array

Our Download of the Day today is Defraggler 2.04.297.

Most defrag tools only allow you to defrag an entire drive. Defraggler lets you specify one or more files, folders, or the whole drive to defragment.

When Defraggler reads or writes a file, it uses the exact same techniques that Windows uses. Using Defraggler is just as safe for your files as using Windows.

At a glance, you can see how fragmented your hard drive is. Defraggler's drive map shows you blocks that are empty, not fragmented, or needing defragmentation.

• Give your hard drive a quick touch-up with Quick Defrag

• Organizes empty disk space to further prevent fragmentation

• Defragment while you sleep - and wake up with a faster PC. Set Defraggler to run daily, weekly or monthly

• Full Windows OS and Multi-lingual support

• Boot time defrag of system files

• Supports 37 major languages

Defraggler is made by Piriform, the company that also brought you CCleaner and Recuva, so is completely free!
