Opera Mini 6 for iOS, browser goodness for iPhone and iPad

By: Array

I used to be Opera-exclusive a few years ago, before the big Firefox craze and before Google Chrome was even thought of. I'm a Chrome fanboy on both PC and Mac now, but for my iPad - Opera Mini 6 rocks the house. I downloaded it this morning and compared to Safari, it just rocks. Opera Mini iPhone App made a pretty amazing entrance to the App Store in April last year; grabbing 1 million downloads in its first day.

However, they just released Opera Mini 6 for iOS and this morning I tried it before driving to my day job and it is simply amazing. I had 5 minutes with it and my initial impressions left me wanting to use it more. Pages seemed to load up at least twice as fast as the stock browser and the interface feels so much more intuitive. Opera Software says the browser features up to 90-percent compression of data traffic for faster browsing, improved display and a refreshed user interface to accommodate for various screen sizes.

Another bonus? Well, it's free!

Steve Ballmer confirms "next generation of Windows systems" coming next year

By: Array

Steve Ballmer has done the world a great honor, he has announced (officially) that Microsoft are not only working on Windows 8, but we should expect to hear a lot about Windows 8 and Windows 8-based slates, tablets, PCs and a variety of different form factors. Great!

Ballmer also announced that Windows 7 PCs are expected to hit the 350 million units this year which is an amazing achievement in such a short amount of time and versus Apple, it's not even competition. But we are of course, comparing Apples... to oranges here. Haw, haw. The speech Ballmer gave was at the Microsoft Developer Forum in Tokyo, Japan just yesterday. It's quite long; if you'd like to take a look at it, try this link.

Google Chrome 13 intros experimental feature, hidden nav bar option

By: Array

Google Chrome has a great minimalist approach, the developers have strived to constantly cut down parts of the browser window that is not showing content. This is in the words of virtually all Obama speeches, is taking an unprecedented turn and looking to change the traditional navigation bar.

The new experimental user interface has found its way into the early pre-release build of Chrome 13 and offers a sneak peak at what Google is aiming for. The browser navigation toolbar has the option of being completely hidden and leaves only the tab bar, menu button and content area. The forward and back buttons are moved into the tab bar, placing them in the top-left corner of the window.

Windows 8: Build 8006 is floating around, excitement builds

Windows 8 has hit build 8006 and was compiled on May 13 at 6:55PM. The built number passed the magical 8000 mark somewhere between April 29 and May 12. If people remember the Windows 7 beta, with Windows 7 beta being build 7000 and release candidate (RC) being build 7100, RTM had the build number of 7600.

TweakTown image news/1/9/19719_79_windows_8_build_8006_is_floating_around_excitement_builds.jpg

Microsoft might not follow the same build number milestones as Windows 7 did, but we know that beta builds of Windows 8 are having the same success that Windows 7 received. This can only be a good thing and lets hope Windows 8 continues on its success being closed, beta doors.

Download of the Day: Spybot Search & Destroy 2.0 Beta 1

By: Array

Our Download of the Day today is Spybot Search & Destroy 2.0 Beta 1.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies.

If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware.

Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Spybot-S&D can also clean usage tracks, an interesting function if you share your computer with other users and don't want them to see what you have been working on. And for professional users, Spybot-S&D allows you to fix some registry inconsistencies and extended reports.
