Microsoft to show off Windows 8 pre-beta build next week?

By: Array

Microsoft are holding their Worldwide Partner Conference next week and are tipped to show off their pre-beta version of Windows 8. WPC 2011 starts on July 11 and WinRumors noticing a tweet from an account called @MSFTtm which said "Microsoft wil release a CTP [Community Technology Preview] build of Windows 8" at the conference. Of course, a single tweet from an unverified source does not guarantee it will happen, but this particular source has been pretty spot on about previous Windows 8 builds.

TweakTown image news/2/0/20122_242_microsoft_to_show_off_windows_8_pre_beta_build_next_week.jpg

On top of that, tech site Windows 8 Beta says that "two independent sources" confirmed its earlier report that Microsoft would unveil the pre-beta build at WPC 2011. They also claim that Microsoft are looking at releasing said pre-beta build to gold partners just after the conference. If the rumors are true, it shows Microsoft are quite aggressive with their timetable for Windows8.

Skype 5.2 released for Mac, includes group screen sharing and video calls

By: Array

Just after the magical release of Skype 5.5 for Windows which included deep Facebook integration (why do I feel dirty saying that?), they've just launched their new solution for Apple. Skype 5.2 for Mac is now available and seems to be much better equipped than the 5.1 version that was released back in November of 2010. The new video is not only capable of group video calls (which was available in the November beta) but also share their screens during that call.

TweakTown image news/2/0/20110_234_skype_5_2_released_for_mac_includes_group_screen_sharing_and_video_calls.jpg

Screen sharing is already available for free on a one-to-one Skype call, but the new ability to share documents, photos, presentations and whatever else you choose with multiple people in a single session really makes the product shine. The downfall? To take advantage of the group video calling and screen sharing function, one or more call participants must have a Skype Premium subscription.
