Skype for iPhone is finally here

Sean Kalinich | Mar 30, 2009 10:37 AM CDT

Skype's screens are well organized and use the iPhone's ability to add filters, for instance, to sort your contacts alphabetically, or by who's online. There's chatting as well, though Skype's flagship feature is its VoIP calling that's free to other Skype users and an inexpensive per-minute fee to landlines. Calls on Skype for iPhone work only if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network, so your call quality will in part be at the mercy and strength of wireless networks nearby--calls will not work over the cell phone network on the iPhone (but chatting will.) Assuming your connection is solid, you can dial a number or quickly call a contacts stored in your address book. iPod Touch users will need earphones with an embedded mic to talk. During a call, you can mute the line, go on hold, or put the call on speakerphone. In the My Info window, you can follow a link to buy more SkypeOut credit online

Dell Confirms MID Or Smartphone In Development

Zac O'Vadka | Mar 25, 2009 11:10 PM CDT

Rumors have been flying around claiming that Dell was looking to get into the smartphone or MID market. In late January, many expected Dell to unveil its smartphone at the GSMA Mobile World Congress, but those plans never materialized.

Dell said, "We already have agreements with many mobile carriers around netbook devices, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that we would have smaller mobile Internet devices or smartphones in the future."

Asus passes Apple as most reliable Computer maker

Sean Kalinich | Mar 25, 2009 11:25 AM CDT

The new leader of the group is ASUS, with an unusually high score of 972. The company is, however, sharing its position with the IBM/Lenovo partnership, despite the latter's score of 348. RESCUECOM ntoes that the ASUS number has been swayed by a sudden influx of Eee netbooks from the previous quarter, which may mean that the company's score will settle as its products undergo more rigorous use.

Ranking third in the study is Toshiba at 172, followed by Acer in fourth with 151, and HP/Compaq in fifth with 142. Conspicuously absent is Dell, which is typically in competition with HP for domination of North American PC sales.

New iPhone rumored for June?

Sean Kalinich | Mar 23, 2009 2:09 PM CDT

New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it's also a new iPhone)

U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)

The annual iPhone launch is "becoming a tradition."

Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.

AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.

Apple's 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going...uh, k?

They said customers shouldn't need to choose from AT&T's high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?

Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.

The $99 3G netbook will start selling this summer, and the first one won't be a Windows OS.

What is really new in iPhone OS 3.0?

Sean Kalinich | Mar 18, 2009 11:51 AM CDT

For the most part, however, iPhone users seem satisfied with their devices without those features. Key additions such as copy and paste, a landscape keyboard, real search capabilities, and MMS (multimedia messaging system) will make the iPhone even easier to use.

Developers are the ones who will probably be most excited about the new iPhone OS. The ability to use background notifications, for example, will make for much more compelling iPhone and iPod Touch applications, as was immediately apparent from some of the demonstrations Tuesday.

In addition, developers will have 1,000 new APIs (application programming interfaces) to play with that will unlock parts of the iPhone previously off limits or unavailable to third-party applications. Apple didn't get into all of them, but talked about how developers can now stream audio and video, send e-mail from inside applications, and use the iPhone's proximity sensor, which means Google will once again be in compliance with the iPhone SDK.

No DRM in chip in iPod Shuffle Headphones

Sean Kalinich | Mar 17, 2009 9:21 AM CDT

You can quote me on this: it's a control chip. There's no authentication. There's no DRM," Lee said.

The chip allows signals to be passed along the cable to control the volume and track, and the other functions that can be controlled via the earbud controls. "I love to be able to control my music...using headphones," Lee said. "Part of that reason is that the iPod is usually tucked away somewhere," out of reach, he said.

The question is whether the new chip will be become a focal point for Apple's IP protections. Although Apple does not supply the chip itself, Monster has at least a set of guidelines or required functions for the chip itself, which Lee said he could not discuss because of contractual limitations. "There's no magic behind it," Lee added.

Shuffle Headphones have Authentication chip

Sean Kalinich | Mar 16, 2009 12:59 PM CDT

V-Moda, one of the manufacturers who announced shuffle-compatible headphones last week, just confirmed to us that yes, an authentication chip IS "required to enable to volume control functionality with the new shuffle (as well as the latest gen of iPod and MacBooks)." The difference here is that iPods and MacBooks worked with headphones that didn't have the authentication chip. The shuffle does not.

V-Moda also says that they've collaborated with Apple for the past few months developing the technology. It seems safe to conclude two things. One, manufacturers who want their headphones to work with the shuffle need to work with Apple in order to get access to the tech inside the authentication chip. Two, only people who Apple "like" are going to get this tech and make compatible headphones-but it's likely that Apple likes almost anybody with the money to pay for licensing.

iPod Touch 2G finally gets Pwnd

Sean Kalinich | Mar 11, 2009 1:27 PM CDT

Those of you who hang out on IRC or were able to read between the lines in the various blogs, forums, wikis and twitters may realize that we - and importantly, that's a that's a collective, cross-team "we" :) - had been hoping to hold onto this full ipt2g jailbreak until the next version of the iPhone came out. That didn't happen, but maybe it's too late for Apple to fix the bootrom in the next iPhone.

The raw patch to the firmware that transforms the "tethered" jailbreak into an untethered one was released here but it's not yet packaged up into the PwnageTool or QuickPwn flows. But other threads there are pulling together tutorials and other tips for those of you anxious to try this out now. For the curious, the hole itself is explained here. There's also a "pen and paper" analysis that helped the hybrid team venture transform the hole into an exploit. Hopefully that will be up for viewing soon too, if only because of its geeky beauty :)
