Rumors have been flying around claiming that Dell was looking to get into the smartphone or MID market. In late January, many expected Dell to unveil its smartphone at the GSMA Mobile World Congress, but those plans never materialized.

Dell said, "We already have agreements with many mobile carriers around netbook devices, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect that we would have smaller mobile Internet devices or smartphones in the future."

For the most part, however, iPhone users seem satisfied with their devices without those features. Key additions such as copy and paste, a landscape keyboard, real search capabilities, and MMS (multimedia messaging system) will make the iPhone even easier to use.

Developers are the ones who will probably be most excited about the new iPhone OS. The ability to use background notifications, for example, will make for much more compelling iPhone and iPod Touch applications, as was immediately apparent from some of the demonstrations Tuesday.

In addition, developers will have 1,000 new APIs (application programming interfaces) to play with that will unlock parts of the iPhone previously off limits or unavailable to third-party applications. Apple didn't get into all of them, but talked about how developers can now stream audio and video, send e-mail from inside applications, and use the iPhone's proximity sensor, which means Google will once again be in compliance with the iPhone SDK.

The chip allows signals to be passed along the cable to control the volume and track, and the other functions that can be controlled via the earbud controls. "I love to be able to control my music...using headphones," Lee said. "Part of that reason is that the iPod is usually tucked away somewhere," out of reach, he said.

The question is whether the new chip will be become a focal point for Apple's IP protections. Although Apple does not supply the chip itself, Monster has at least a set of guidelines or required functions for the chip itself, which Lee said he could not discuss because of contractual limitations. V-Moda, one of the manufacturers who announced shuffle-compatible headphones last week, just confirmed to us that yes, an authentication chip IS "required to enable to volume control functionality with the new shuffle (as well as the latest gen of iPod and MacBooks)." The difference here is that iPods and MacBooks worked with headphones that didn't have the authentication chip. The shuffle does not.

V-Moda also says that they've collaborated with Apple for the past few months developing the technology. It seems safe to conclude two things. One, manufacturers who want their headphones to work with the shuffle need to work with Apple in order to get access to the tech inside the authentication chip. Two, only people who Apple "like" are going to get this tech and make compatible headphones-but it's likely that Apple likes almost anybody with the money to pay for licensing.

Those of you who hang out on IRC or were able to read between the lines in the various blogs, forums, wikis and twitters may realize that we - and importantly, that's a that's a collective, cross-team "we" :) - had been hoping to hold onto this full ipt2g jailbreak until the next version of the iPhone came out. That didn't happen, but maybe it's too late for Apple to fix the bootrom in the next iPhone.
