Apple patent app shows off sweet new MagSafe cables

By: Array

I think that more patent applications surface from Apple than any other company. Maybe it's that we only hear about the Apple ones, either way a cool new app has surfaced today that comes from Apple and shows some cool tech that we may be seeing on future Mac computers and notebooks. The patent app shows off a new version of the MagSafe cable, which is one of the coolest things about the MacBook line of notebooks in my opinion.

The MagSafe cable is familiar to many of us with the design that pops free easily if it's pulled on to keep you from catching the cord and knocking the notebook off a desk. The patent app outlines a new version of the MagSafe connector that provides the juice the notebook needs along with servicing the function of a power cable as well.

Acer and Gateway have been part of the same company for a while now and the extra reach that Gateway bought to Acer helped the company to grow significantly in the notebook market. A new Gateway notebook is headed to Japan that has some nice features and is a rather green offering as well. The machine is the Gateway EC19C-A52C/S notebook.

Apple MacBook Pro refresh to be a complete redesign?

By: Array

Itching for a new laptop? Well, Apple are looking to refresh the MacBook Pro line early next year and instead of a simple upgrade in specs we could see a complete redesign like the latest MacBook Air received.

TweakTown image news/1/7/17773_17.jpg

The new MacBook Pro is poised to move into SSD territory by offering up to 512GB of Solid State storage, the removal of the optical drive and it might include Light-Peak which will make it a first-ever debut into the market giving Apple the exclusive.

Dell Inspiron Duo convertible notebook hits available right now

By: Array

There are plenty of convertible notebooks and netbooks on the market today. They all use a screen that swivels at the base and folds down to turn into a tablet and that process can take a bit of time and the hinges always feel flimsy to me. Dell unveiled its Inspiron Duo convertible netbook a while back and the machine has a very interesting design for the convertible screen.

TweakTown image news/1/7/17703_4.jpg

Rather than having a pivot at the base of the screen, the Duo has two pivot on the sides of the screen and a frame for the screen that doesn't move. To convert the user simply rotates the screen from facing the keyboard to facing away from it. The Duo can also be used in landscape of portrait modes in tablet guise as well.

Acer offers up its first 3D Laptop in Japan

By: Array

The number of notebooks, AIOs, and desktop computers on the market that support 3D are growing all the time. The uptake of 3D in the company market is better than it is at home. Computer users don't mind wearing glasses to play 3D games most of the time while the average TV watcher in the living room might balk at wearing glasses for 3D. Acer has pulled out its first 3D notebook and is offering the machine in Japan.

We have most of the specs of the machine and know that it will land on December 3 in Japan and cost 3D fans under 100,000 yen. For that much loot Japanese geeks will get a 15.6-inch notebook with a screen offering a 120Hz refresh rate good for 3D content using the NVIDIA 3D Vision system. The machine will ship with the active 3D glasses the NVIDIA system needs to enjoy the effects.

Jolibook not-a-netbook launches in UK

By: Array

Jolicloud says that its little Jolibook is not a netbook. That is despite the fact that it is sized like a netbook, has netbook hardware, and targets shoppers wanting a netbook with an alternative OS installed. We can all agree to just call the thing a netbook from now on. The only thing about the machine not exactly like your typical netbook is that the Jolibook runs the Jolicloud 1.1 OS.

Other than the special OS, that Jolicloud reckons turns the netbook into a "little computer" the rig has average netbook hardware. You get a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600; the CPU is an Atom N550 with dual cores. Graphics are via Intel GMA 3150, and the rig has 1GB of RAM.

Dell Inspiron Duo up for pre-order at Microsoft Store online

By: Array

Dell has been talking up its interesting convertible notebook called the Inspiron Duo for a while now. The machine isn't like your typical convertible netbook where the entire LCD rotates around for tablet mode on a hinge. The screen of the Duo is attached to a pivot in the middle for the frame allowing it to flip around as needed.

TweakTown image news/1/7/17653_4.jpg

The Inspiron Duo is on the Microsoft Store online for pre-order right now. The machine will cost you $549 for the netbook only and you can add Signature Premium to it for an additional $99. Signature Premium service is an entire year of VIP tech support and LoJack for laptops.

Jolibook hits Amazon today in UK for pre-order

By: Array

If you are a fan of netbooks that run alternate OS' a new offering is set to hit the UK today on Amazon. The new netbook is called the Jolibook and the thing can be pre-ordered and has a very vague and long estimated ship time. Don't expect to get your hands on this thing in time for Christmas.

According to Amazon UK, the machine will ship 1 to 3 months from today if you pre-order. That is a serious range and enough to make me go looking for another netbook to order. The only thing different about the Jolibook and any other netbook on the market is the OS. Other than the Jolicloud 1.1 OS, the machine is your basic netbook under the skin.
