Garmin has unveiled a new GPS device that doesn't look like the typical GPS unit. Rather than being a boxy rectangle, the new nuvi 3700 series looks more like an iPod touch crammed inside a windshield mount.
The 3700 is claimed to be the thinnest PND around at less than 9mm thick. The device has a touchscreen and users can zoom in on maps using pinch and tap gestured. The screen is 4.3-inches wide and can be used in portrait or landscape modes.
The device has a customizable wake up phrase that will activate the voice navigation. Maps are offered in 2D and 3D modes. The device has features you expect on a high-end GPS unit like lane assist, traffic and more. Pricing and availability are unknown.
N97 owners may like to know that Nokia has just made available its newest Ovi Maps which brings free voice-guided walk and drive turn-by-turn navigation for 74 countries.
The Ovi Maps update has actually been available for a short while already, but until now only supported the N97 mini, 5800 XpressMusic, 5800 Navigation Edition, E52, E55, E72, 5230, 6710 Navigator, 6730 classic and X6.
Keep in mind, to use this free navigation you must have first updated your N97 to the latest software version (2.0.x). However, in some markets the update might not yet be available, but Nokia is said to be providing a workaround for that in the near future.

The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling! Ok, ok not really but in the near future we may see some of those expensive GPS satellites falling from the sky and hindering our ability to drive to the store without getting lost.
The problem is that no one has been spending enough to keep the aging GPS satellite system in working order. To get accurate global coverage you need at least 24 GPS nodes floating up there, currently there are 31.
No problem you say, but the rub is that most are already past their designed life and the US military (the people with the pink slip0 have not been replacing them fast enough. So in the next couple of years we may have GPS outages while they rush to replace the failing satellites.

The US Air Force is said to be spending £1.3 billion to bring the US system up to date, but the GAO report says that repairs are not happening fast enough. The GPS network is run by the US military and rented by commercial firms internationally for sat-nav systems.
"It is uncertain whether the Air Force will be able to acquire new satellites in time to maintain current GPS service without interruption," said the report.
"If not, some military operations and some civilian users could be adversely affected," the GAO warned.
