AMD GPU14 - As AMD was closing out its opening day keynote at its GPU14 event in Hawaii, EA took the opportunity to show off a never before seen demo of the single player level Angry Sea in the upcoming Battlefield 4 game. The level is split between a battle on a sinking aircraft carrier and then, as the ship sinks, combat is switched to the sea and attack boats.
"Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world!" That is the opening line to Steams second big announcement this week. Today valve announced "Steam Hardware", something we were all expecting in some form or another. The company says that it wants customers go to choose the hardware that makes sense for them, and that they are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam game machines to the market in 2014.
All of the machines will run SteamOS, and will be tailored to fit an individual's personal needs, such as powerful hardware, or a quiet gaming experience. Valve did not say who its hardware partners were, but did say that there will be several devices launched in 2014. The biggest announcement however is about will be building its own prototype in which it will give to 300 lucky Steam users free of charge for testing.
"While these products are still in development, we need your help. As always, we believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that's optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it's also completely upgradable and open.This year we're shipping just 300 of these boxes to Steam users, free of charge, for testing. You can make yourself eligible to get one."
Microsoft has confirmed to Polygon that gamers will be able to upload gameplay capture clips from their Xbox One consoles to social media sites like Facebook and YouTube "in 2014."
Xbox One gamers will have the ability of sharing their clips through Xbox Live when the Xbox One launches, but you won't be able to share those same clips to Facebook or YouTube at launch. Gameplay clips can also be edited, which will be a nice touch. Personally, I don't know why Microsoft wouldn't have this ability built into the Xbox One at launch, is this yet another last minute decision?
I wanted to say "here we go again" but I've already used that line up in a previous GTA V on PC story, but the rumors persist, and we're here yet again. But, this time, we have more details on the technical side of GTA V.
The latest talk of Grand Theft Auto V on the PC leads us to believe that we should expect GTA V on the PC to feature DirectX 11 support, 64-bit support, 2K textures and Advanced Effects> These advanced effects would arrive as Bloom, which should make the world of GTA V more lush when you look at the horizon. The 64-bit support will see support for more than 4GB of RAM, which is definitely something we're going to need with a world as big as GTA V.

We have quite the juicy rumor today, that Apple paid EA a large sum of money to delay its huge title, Plants vs. Zombies 2, on Android. Of course, Apple is denying any and all comments regarding the deal.
But, we have Frank Gibeau, head of EA Labels, stating that "Apple gave us a truckload of money to delay the Android version [of Plants vs Zombies 2]." The quote cam from an internal town hall meeting held at EA earlier today. We don't know how much money represents a "truckload" but it would have to be several million at least.
Considering that Plants vs. Zombies 2 has already launched on Android in China, and is outselling the iOS version 6-1, this could be a very big reason why. One of the biggest games on mobile, selling six times better on Android, is a very big reason for Apple to enjoy the exclusivity of it. Apple has flatly denied all claims, saying that no money has changed hands regarding the PvZ 2 title.
This morning, Amazon announced that the popular soccer game FIFA 14 (Kindle Tablet Edition) is now available on the Amazon app store. The game from Electronic Arts features 33 leagues, more than 600 teams, and more than 16,000 players.
EA Sports says that FIFA 14 allows you to follow your favorite club and play along with real-world fixtures from the top leagues. Each injury, suspension, and changing of the team is reflected in game, making the game feel more like a real life soccer franchise.
Additionally, players can buy, trade, and sell FIFA players to create their own fantasy team. Compete in tournaments, play for free, and even purchase game packs to keep the action going. The game is available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Dutch, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese.
Crytek has challenged software makers, pushing them to create a program that would use open source street map data in order to render in-game world environments, which would save countless man hours creating the worlds we all play games in.
The concept is now in use at the IC tomorrow's digital innovation games content, which offers up to £25,000 to five businesses to create an innovative applications that meets certain objectives, provided by big companies including Google, Sony, Intel and Crytek. Crytek's Technical Director of R&D, Jake Turner, said: "Why do we have to use people to make a city when there's consistent open source street data out there which is very detailed, it's got buildings, lights, it's got streets - material data. Why can't we just press a button and instantly see that?"
Battlefield 4 is a day closer to being played on our PCs or consoles, and now there's a new post on the official Battlefield 4 website that details the second-screen application for BF4, Battlelog.
Battlelog will allow gamers to use a PC, smartphone or tablet for maps, leaderboards and much, much more. The service for BF4 will allow gamers to track how many of their friends are online, and just how many active missions are accessible. Gamers will be able to create emblems, which will be displayed on soldiers and guns in the multiplayer portion of Battlefield 4.
When gamers are away from their PCs or consoles, Battlelog on their smartphones for example can let them view status, access forums and leaderboards, customize their loadout and more. Battlelog is also capable of giving players the chance of remotely joining new servers quickly. The update on the BF4 website says:
Usually, you'd have to exit the game you're currently in and then search for your next server in the menus. Now you can pull up the list of servers on Battlelog, find the one you want to play on and press 'Join.' It'll pull you right into that server. It's extremely fast and fluid and a whole new way to find games on both console and PC.
We've been wondering what Sony would do after it purchased premium cloud-based service Gaikai, but now we know: Sony will stream PS3 games to the PlayStation 4 starting next year. This will go around the issue that the PS4 is an x86-based device, compared to the custom chips inside of the PS3.
We shouldn't expect full compatibility and the entire PS3 library, but the Japanese company has said that Gaikai would compliment its next-gen console nicely, affording for interactive functions like Remote Play and more. The news comes directly from Sony Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, when he spoke at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this week in Japan.
Yoshida stated that Gaikai will begin offering the streaming of certain PS3 games to the PS4 starting next year in the US. Yoshida also confirmed that Sony plans to continuously build up the PS3 library for the PS4, where it'll first build a core library, constantly adding titles to it.
The Forza 5 team has taken a unique approach to marketing their upcoming realistic racing game that is exclusive to the Xbox One. The team partnered up with famous supercar maker McLaren and stunt car driver Tanner Foust to produce what they are calling "FilmSpeed.
FilmSpeed is a short film shot in the zoetrope format and features more than 680 aluminum panels that feature frame by frame scenes from the highly anticipated Forza Motorsport 5 video game that will launch with the Xbox One this November.
The aluminum panels were spaced several inches apart and filmed via a rooftop-mounted camera on a McLaren 12C supercar driven by Tanner Foust at speeds up to 120 mph. The result is nothing short of amazing and is one of the most original and creative marketing plans I have ever seen. I have watched the video several times now and after writing this article I think I'm going to watch it again.
