Pro-Tip Friday: Nintendo recommends updating Wii U before wrapping it for under the tree

Nintendo has tweeted out a good piece of advice for parents purchasing the Wii U for their kids this Christmas. The tweet suggests that anyone giving a Wii U should open it up and download the 5GB update before wrapping it up and placing under the tree. While it's probably more important to do this for little kids, the advice holds true for anyone giving it to a non-tech person.

Keep in mind that if power is lost during the update, the console could become bricked. If you're currently in a storm, you might not want to do the update right then. I'm not so sure that this should be called a pro-tip, though. As comments on Neogaf suggest, the real pro-tip would be to have manufacturing install the update before shipping them out.

That said, if you're getting a Wii U for a kid, you should probably do this so they can get to playing as soon as they open it.

Edit: Reader Ryan points out that the console will only brick if you lose power during the actual update portion, not the downloading part.

RumorTT: Ubisoft looking to purchase THQ's Assets

As we reported on Wednesday, THQ has filled for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy after the popular Humble Bundle event that seemed like a huge success. As a result of the bankruptcy, THQ handed over its assets to Clearlake Investments, an investment firm that deals in buying and selling businesses.

Game maker Ubisoft has reportedly tossed their hat into the game and expressed interest in purchasing the THQ assets. No word has been released on how much Ubisoft is willing to pay, but sources are saying that they are holding out for a bottom dollar price.

If successful in acquiring THQ, Ubisoft would take over five studios - including Vigil Games, Relic Entertainment, Volition, and THQ Montreal - and attain the rights to such titles as Darksiders, Saints Row, Company of Heroes, Homefront, Metro and Red Faction, as well as the licencing deals for games based on WWE and some of the Warhammer titles.

Steam for Linux ends closed beta

Steam announced yesterday that it was ending it's closed beta of Steam on Linux and was moving forward with an open beta. Everyone who would like to try out some "Tux Gaming" is now welcome to load the Steam client onto their linux based boxes.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27424_1_steam_for_linux_ends_closed_beta.jpg

You might remember this past summer, when Valve CEO Gabe Newell blasted Windows 8 calling it "a catastrophe" for everyone who uses a PC. Since then Valve has been hard at work porting over steam and a small selection of games to Linux.

I personally know of one person who is most likely jumping for joy after hearing this news as steam was the only reason he had an install of windows running. We would love to hear your reaction to steam being available on Linux. Will this change the way you game? Are you participating in the open beta? Let us know in the comments.

Steam Holiday Sales are here once again, let your credit card feel the joy of the holiday season

It's that time of year, folks, with the Steam Holiday Sales beginning with a bunch of great games on special. You can grab yourself a single title, or a franchise, or go all-out and grab yourself a Publisher Pack containing many games.

Mirrors Edge was $9.99 but is now $2.49, a saving of 75%. The Hitman and Borderlands' franchises have between 50-75% off each, which should result in some magnificent savings. There are also some 'Flash Sales', with Natural Selection having 60% off, Deus Ex: Human Revolution enjoying 75% off bringing it down from $24.99 to just $6.24, and then we have Publisher Packs.

Publisher Packs will include a bunch of the biggest titles from a particular publisher, with the SEGA Collection going for $99.99 but including 17 games with an individual cost of $196.29, this pack is great value for money. There are plenty of others, and these deals will change daily.

Head on over to the Steam Holiday Sales now to grab a bargain or 30!

The War Z gets removed from Steam after public outrage

You may have heard of The War Z debacle over the last few days, but it looks like good guy Valve have stepped up and removed the entire game from sale on Steam until the developer sorts their stuff out. If you've already purchased the game, you can choose to keep it, or ask for a full refund from Steam support. Valve admits they made a mistake by releasing The War Z at all, with their full statement below:

TweakTown image news/2/7/27394_06_the_war_z_gets_removed_from_steam_after_public_outrage.jpg

Valve: From time to time a mistake can be made and one was made by prematurely issuing a copy of War Z for sale via Steam. We apologize for this and have temporary removed the sale offering of the title until we have time to work with the developer and have confidence in a new build. Those who purchased the game and wish to continue playing it via Steam may do so. Those who purchased the title via Steam and are unhappy with what they received may seek a refund by creating a ticket at our support site here: https://support.steampowered.com/newticket.php

Again, we apologize any inconvenience.

I can't think of many companies that would remove a game after the public complained about it - but it shows that Valve are quick to act on decisions like this.

Ouya game lineup expands by 10 games after 10 days of developer console giveaways

I'm looking forward to receiving my Ouya console, and I'm sure there are many thousands of people out there feeling the same - but what about games? The Ouya lineup has just expanded by another 10 potential games after 10 lucky new developers received some pre-launch dev units.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27390_03_ouya_game_lineup_expands_by_10_games_after_10_days_of_developer_console_giveaways.jpg

The dev units were given out during a 10-day giveaway on Twitter by Ouya, with the first game being picked up being Fist of Awesome, and the last being Starbound. The Kickstarter-funded, Android-powered console arrives in March 2013, and the game list continues to grow, which is great. Developers should receive their consoles in the coming weeks which should give them some time to get their games polished up and prepared for March.

The full list of games that were included in the 10-day dev unit giveaway are:

  • Day 1: Fist of Awesome
  • Day 2: MechKnight Chronicles
  • Day 3: Syder Arcade
  • Day 4: KidElectro
  • Day 5: Space Runner
  • Day 6: Legend of Dungeon
  • Day 7: iMech Online
  • Day 8: DustyRevenge
  • Day 9: HolyShield!
  • Day 10: Starbound

New SimCity players will require an Internet connection to save game

If you're looking to become the next mayor of a virtual city, just make sure you have an internet connection. Otherwise, all of your hard work will go down the drain about as quickly as you can shut down your computer. That's right, the next SimCity will need a persistent Internet connection to play.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27387_1_new_simcity_players_will_require_an_internet_connection_to_save_game.png

But, it's a bit more important than most games make it. Some require it to start, however SimCity will require it to save the game. This could prove troublesome if your Internet goes down while playing. Think about it--you might have to restart your system to get the connection back, but you can't do that because you can't save.

The reasoning behind the constant connection is both for piracy reasons, but also because of the multiplayer features, according to Maxis' Stone Librande. In response to a Reddit question, Maxis responded that if you lose your connection, you'll be allowed "to play for as long as we can preserve your game state," which is a period that will "likely be minutes."

Nintendo TVii service coming to Wii U on December 20 in US and Canada

Nintendo was supposed to have this TVii service on the Wii U at launch, and it disappointed many when they didn't. However, they have announced that the service will be available on the Wii U starting December 20, at least for the US and Canada. TVii, for those who don't follow Nintendo closely, uses the Gamepad to organize online video content from different sources.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27381_1_nintendo_tvii_service_coming_to_wii_u_on_december_20_in_us_and_canada.jpg

When it launches tomorrow, it will support Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus, and cable and satellite providers. Netflix and TiVo won't be coming to the service until "early 2013" for the US, and an unknown date for Canada. It's not clear if this update will be as large as the day-one update that has plagued the Wii U.

"After Dec. 20, you'll never look at your TV the same way again," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "Wii U owners have already experienced the transformative effect that the GamePad has on game play and social interaction. Nintendo TVii shows how the integrated second screen of the GamePad can also transform and enhance the TV viewing experience. Welcome to the new world of TVii."

Sony unveils the PS3 Lunch Box, isn't quite the next-gen of consoles unfortunately, but it'll look after your sandwiches

Sony have unveiled the PS3 Lunch Box, which is a special edition item as an appreciation from Sony Computer Entertainment for the continued support on long-running, and very successful games such as the Final Fantasy and Metal Gear series.

The PS3 Lunch Box will see a release in Japan, and is called a 'bentou', or a Japanese meal box. This particular device is a juubako, or a nest box type bentou. The top of the Lunch Box looks like your standard PlayStation 3.

This isn't any standard lunch box, either, as it has been claimed that the PS3 Lunch Box was made with the highest woodworking and laser etching techniques available to designers. The cool-looking lunch box can have any food inside of it, as it has been stated to be safe to put any food in it as it won't damage from spills easily.

Metal Gear Rising Revengence demo is coming to North America

Metal Gear Rising Revenge's Demo, previously only available in Japan will be hitting US shelves in 2013. Unlike its predecessors, Metal Gear Rising Revenge is a faced paced action shooter instead of the stealthy sneak around game play that we are use to. Release is set for January 2013.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27285_1_metal_gear_rising_revengence_demo_is_coming_to_north_america.jpg

The game timeline explores what happened to protagonist Raiden, and will take place somewhere between Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear 4. The full game is set to launch in February of 2013 and with just a month between the demo launch and the game launch we are wondering what Kojima is thinking. At the moment we can only confirm that the demo will be available on PS3 and Xbox360, with no word on PC support.
