Computex Taipei 2011 - Apacer was showing its range of memory and SSDs, but one really cool thing we spotted was their AL830 HD media player.
The AL830 is by no means a new product, but what we saw at this year's Computex was a near finished design that adds modular storage to the device. An optional matching device can simply be attached by SATA like connectors. This shouldn't come as too much as a surprise since Apacer is primarily a storage outfit and added additional storage in this fashion makes perfect logical sense.
On the back of the media player to get a fair selection of connectors including YPbPr output, AV output, optical audio output, HDMI output, LAN, USB 2.0 input and of course AC power input.
The AL820 looks rather capable and we look forward to getting in a sample for review soon. I bet Anthony cannot wait to put it through its paces.
COMPUTEX Taipei 2011 - One of our final stops for the day was with Patriot Memory who had a full range of SSDs and memory on display as you would expect, but one of the big products that caught our eye was the upcoming PBO Alpine media player.
This media player uses Google Android 2.2 OS for its interface system and to be honest it was kinda interesting and exciting for once to see Android mentioned outside of a tablet device for once.
The PZBO Alpine looks to be a pretty standard media player, but with the advantage of running Android apps, so it should be quite interesting when it comes out. We were told it should go on sale late August or early September with an estimated street price of around $120.

Check out the preview trailer for the JJ Abrams/Jonathan Nolan-produced show that's coming soon, Person of Interest. It features LOST alumni Michael Emerson as well as Jim Caviezel in a show where 'numbers' (LOST fans will love this) are a key point to the show. It's definitely looking good and features some strong, charismatic actors as well as some great producers behind the scenes! The preview is below:
This is another good looking show from FOX, JJ Abrams is an Executive Producer on it and it features a Lost alumni Jorge Garcia and the great Sam Neill. The show revolves around the Alcatraz prison where all of the in-mates go missing and turn up in 2011. I don't want to spoil this one too much for you, but take a look at the trailer and I'm sure you'll be impressed:
Looks good, right? I'll be tuning in to watch this, two great actors that I love, JJ Abrams-powered and featuring the great Alcatraz. All we need now is Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery and this would be a party!
Been following this one for a while, the Steven Spielberg-produced dinosaur and time travelling show Terra Nova. Terra Nova will air on FOX on Mondays this Fall, and the show "follows an ordinary family on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a daring experiment to save the human race." The shows story line seems a lot better than most science fiction setups, with scientists finding a fracture in time that makes it possible to construct a portal into primeval history. The idea behind this is to rebuild civilisation and 'get it right this time'.
The trailer doesn't look too bad at all with some surprisingly good special FX and features an actor I loved on Life on Mars, Jason O'Mara. The show is out this fall and I'm sure after you watch that trailer it'll be on your list of things to watch for sure.
Superman is something very important to me, as a child I grew up with the Christopher Reeve movies and since then have been a big fan of anything Superman. I've watched Smallville for ten years now and have enjoyed the show, it has evolved into something so much better than the Freak of the Week and with introductions with actors such as the great Cassidy Freeman as Tess and Justin Hartley as Oliver, the show has really started to shine.
Out of season 7 came the departure of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar departed the show and their rule of "no tights, no flight" left too. In came maturity and an ever-growing story of Clark finally meeting his destiny of becoming Superman. At this time season greats such as Michael Rosenbaum who plays (in my opinion) the best Lex Luthor in the Superman mythos left, but, this is the big thing - he comes back for the Series Finale tomorrow night.
Boxee Box has evolved, the strange yet unique looking media player has just stepped into v1.1 software and is looking better than ever. The v1.1 update is rolling out over the next few days and includes a mammoth amount of fies and new features. First of all we have the huge browser update which now includes favorites, history and a better UI which now shows off more of the picture and includes more options, plus expanded HTML5 capabilities that should fix login problems for HBO Go.
The on-screen display has been tweaked and has a new seek bar for more precise FF/Rewind support as well as support for customized local metadata and NFO files (!), a new MLB.tv app and two new content partners. Volume controls have been moved and this is (according to Boxee) to put the Boxee Box in line with Blu-ray players that don't include volume adjustment. The update should be pushed out automatically, but if you are impatient and want it now, now, now then you can have a look on the Boxee Box forums.
Fan of the Final Destination films? Look no further than the official trailer to the upcoming Final Destination 5. The fifth outing in the Final Destination series is set around a massive bridge collapse disaster, which in some parts has some really awful CG. But, like the Saw series - you don't watch it for special effects or realism in script, etc. You watch these movies for popcorn fun! Take a look at the trailer:
