AMD Ryzen CPU naming scheme for 2023+ makes things clearer, confusing

Anthony Garreffa | Sep 8, 2022 10:14 PM CDT

AMD is updating the model numbering system for its Ryzen CPUs starting in 2023 and beyond, where the new numbering system makes it easier -- their goal -- for consumers to see where Ryzen CPUs stack up against each other moving forward.

AMD Ryzen CPU naming scheme for 2023+ makes things clearer, confusing

The new numbering system starts with the "Portfolio Model Year" and 7 which indicates the year (2023) while an 8 would mean 2024, 9 would be 2025, and well 10... I guess we might see a new numbering system by then or AMD could go super-powered and go over 10,000. The next one is the "Market Segment" where you'll know how powerful the CPU is: the x9xx CPU being a Ryzen 9 part, an x3xx CPU being a Ryzen 3 chip, and so on.

Next up you've got the "Architecture" where which is the new part for users, where "4" will start off thanks to the newly-announced and soon-to-be-released Zen 4 architecture, with the final number being the "Feature Isolation" which AMD splits into 0 and above being a lower model within the segment while 5 and over is the upper model within the segment.

Anthony Garreffa | Sep 1, 2022 7:16 PM CDT

AMD's new Ryzen 9 7950X processor has now been detailed, but there are things we don't know yet and one of those is thermals... especially under load.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processor runs at toasty 95C at 230W power

But weeks before release, Enthusiast Citizen wrote on Bilibili from people who have both Zen 4 and Raptor Lake CPUs in their hands with some early thermal results. AMD's new Zen 4-powered Ryzen 9 7950X is running at a toasty 95C at 230W, which is needed for AMD to maintain 5GHz+ clock speeds. Meanwhile, Intel's new "Raptor Lake" powered Core i9-13900K runs at a cooler 82C with the same cooler.

Wccftech also reports from their sources that the new Ryzen 9 7000 series CPUs are running at 92-94C, even when it's being cooled with a high-end 360mm AIO cooler. This is without any overclocking applied but remember: this is an engineering/qualifying sample and not in final retail form so thermal performance should be different.

AMD's new Zen 4 CPUs with second-gen 3D V-Cache teased for CES 2023

Anthony Garreffa | Aug 31, 2022 7:08 PM CDT

It was just before the big Zen 4 launch announcement from AMD that we were already hearing rumors on the second-gen 3D V-Cache versions of the new Ryzen 7000 series "Zen 4" CPUs... and now we're hearing launch rumors: CES 2023.

AMD's new Zen 4 CPUs with second-gen 3D V-Cache teased for CES 2023

The new rumors are coming from leaker "Greymon55" who isn't being too clear on Twitter, simply saying "V95, V9, V8" on Twitter: which should translate to the Ryzen 9 7950X3D (V95) + Ryzen 9 7900X3D (V9) + Ryzen 7 7800X3D (V8) processors. In a follow-up tweet, Greymon55 replied to someone asking about the Zen 4 V-Cache CPU launch where "AvgGuy" said "Q1" to which Greymon55 replied "CES".

CES 2023 takes place between January 5 and January 8, 2023, which gives AMD a couple of months between releasing its new flagship Ryzen 9 7950X and Ryzen 9 7900X processors in late September, and the purported CES 2023 reveal of its Zen 4 V-Cache CPUs in the form of the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, Ryzen 9 7900X3D, and Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

AMD's new Zen 4 CPUs on 5nm: 'we don't expect any supply constraints'

Anthony Garreffa | Aug 30, 2022 10:34 PM CDT

AMD has launched its new Ryzen 7000 series "Zen 4" processors and with the new chips being made on TSMC's fresh 5nm process node... so what about supply issues of new tech?

AMD's new Zen 4 CPUs on 5nm: 'we don't expect any supply constraints'

Nope... not an issue says AMD, with CEO Dr. Lisa Su explaining to the audience of its Zen 4 event that the company doesn't expect any supply constraints of its new CPUs. Lisa explained that if we looked back at the last 18 months there have been a "number of things" that have affected supply: capacity limitations, logistics, and more.

Lisa elaborated, saying that from the perspective of AMD they have "dramatically increased" their overall capacity when it comes to wafers, but AMD has also secured substrates and on the back end. She added that while logistically it takes a bit longer to get things into the region, now that the launch of Zen 4 has taken place, AMD is all-systems-go for September 27 when the new products are available for sale.
