By: Array

One of the ways that our devices can get smaller and smaller is by having smaller components available. while we want smaller devices, we also want higher quality components and cameras as well.

TweakTown image news/1/5/15301_4.jpg

A company called OmniVision has unveiled what it claims to be the world's smallest 1080p HD camera solution known as the OV2720. The camera is the world's first 1/6-inhc native 1080p 30 fps HD CMOS image sensor designed for netbooks, notebooks, and webcams.

The device doesn't scale or crop video shot in 1080p resolution and uses 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel for low light sensitivity. The sensor has a z-height of only 3.5mm.

DIY fisheye lens looks ghetto, but works well

By: Array

I'm not big on making things myself aside from computers and messes. When it comes to large DIY projects like car work or building things, I farm them out to people I can yell at if things go wrong. If you are the DIY type who likes to take digital photos this may be a good project for you.

A research engineer from Industrial Light and Magic has conjured up a very ugly fisheye lens for his DSLR, but the thing works well and was cheap. The guy used a single element film projector lens, peephole, foam, hose clamp, and a lens adapter from eBay to cobble the lens together.

As you can see it is ugly, but the images it takes are impressive. The whole works cost under $20 apparently. If I made it the thing would be even uglier and be coated in blood where I cut myself on the can.

Sony set to enter micro four thirds camera market says rumor

By: Array

There are a number of micro four thirds cameras on the market today. These cameras all have interchangeable lenses and cost about the same as some of the DSLRs on the market. The difference is that the DSLR has a mirror inside whereas the micro four thirds cams don't.

TweakTown image news/1/4/14974_5.jpg

Sony is rumored to be getting ready to enter the micro four thirds market with a new Alpha camera supporting the format. The new camera is said to have a snap on lens mount system that needs no twisting for faster lens changes.

Along with the camera three lenses are rumored. The lenses include a 16mm f/2.8 lens, an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, and an 18-200mm zoom lens is rumored as well. The launch date for the camera is supposed to be May 11.

Pa. School had 1000's of images of students taken via webcam

By: Array

Back in February, I mentioned that a school district in PA had been accused of taking images of students using webcams on school provided notebooks without the student knowing. Reports are now coming in that the spying issue may be much more widespread.

TweakTown image news/1/4/14937_5.jpg

The student who filed suit against the district, Blake Robbins, and his attorney has announced that the school had 400 images of Robbins alone. District school board president David Ebby has stated that a "substantial number" of photos of students have been recovered.

Robbins' attorney claims that thousands of photos were taken and is seeking a court order to investigate the notebook of Carol Cafiero. Cafiero is the district technology coordinator.

Carl Zeiss offers new cine lenses for Canon and Nikon DSLRs

By: Array

One of the things I missed most about moving from my old point and shoot to my Nikon D80 DSLR when I first did it was the lack of video recording on the D80. Once the D90 hit video recording was featured again.

Apparently, many people are now making movies with DSLRs that record HD video and famous optics firm Carl Zeiss have unveiled the first cine lenses for HDDSLR cameras. The new lenses include the Compact Prime CP.2 lens that works with cameras like the Canon 5D Mark II. The lens has interchangeable mounts for future upgrades and come in focal lengths form 18mm to 85mm.

The firm has also debuted new Lightweight Zoom LWZ.2 lenses that work with the PL, EF, and F mounts on most all video enabled cameras. Neither of the lenses has a price fixed to them yet, but they will be expensive. Both lenses are set to land in June.
