Microsoft readying 720P HD webcam

By: Array

720p HD video is coming to a Microsoft webcam near you. The Redmond based giant is planning the release of their LifeCam Cinema. The new product should be able to capture video at 1280x720 @ 30 fps.

The device also has a noise canceling microphone on top of the camera. The camera uses a now traditional USB 2.0 connection. It will be out-of-the-box compatible with Windows 7, Vista and XP. The new camera will integrate with Live Messenger, Live Movie Maker and Photo Gallery.

The system requirements are quite high with a Dual Core 1.6GHz CPU just to run the camera while MS recommends a 3GHz Dual Core and 2GB of memory for best performance.

The new LifeCam Cinema is made from Aluminum and has a universal stand for desktop and monitor/laptop mounting.

Samsung launches 12.2 MP camera for Narcissists

By: Array

Here is something for that special person in your life that has eyes for only one, themselves.

Samsung has found a way to make sure all the Facebook and MySpace (and a few other less respectable sites) junkies can get plenty of self portraits for posing up on their pages. They have put a front facing LCD.

The new cameras with this new feature are called the TL220 and TL225. They have some pretty impressive specifications including a 3.5-inch LCD on the back, 12.2 MP resolution, 720p recording 4.6x optical zoom.

Pricing right in the ballpark at around $300 for the TL220 and $350 for the TL225.

These will be a source of joy for those determined to show themselves in public. I will miss the blurry mirror pics on MySpace and Facebook though.

Students Send $80 Camera Into Space with a Balloon

By: Array

A teacher and a group of students from the IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia, Spain managed to get a pair of latex balloons and an $80 Nikon CoolPix camera to an altitude of 100,000 Feet and actually managed to capture images from Space with it.

The balloon was intended to take images from 30,000 feet but before it was all done had exceeded its design by reaching the outer edges of the atmosphere.

The rig had some custom built electronics to control the camera and also to radio its position so it could be tracked on Google Earth.

After reaching 100,000 feet the balloons deflated and the rig fell back to earth where it was recovered 10KM from the starting point still broadcasting its position.

Students Send $80 Camera Into Space with a Balloon

Who needs the Hubble? Not Gerard Marull Paretas, Sergi Saballs Vila, Marta¬ Gasull Morcillo and Jaume Puigmiquel Casamort, that's for sure.

The four Spanish teenagers, working with their teacher Jordi Fanals Oriol as the Meteotek team at the IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia, started with a fairly lofty goal: They wanted to launch a balloon with a digital camera and some custom-built electronic sensors to 30,000 feet. Much to their surprise, they ended up considerably exceeding their expectations. Their $60 heavy duty latex balloon and $80 Nikon digital camera soared to 100,000 feet, right to the edge of space. Describing the team's homegrown approach, Gerard Marull Paretas told the Telegraph, "We took readings as the balloon rose and mapped its progress using Google Earth and the onboard radio receiver."

ZOTAC GTX 260 AMP! 2 Edition caught on camera

ZOTAC's GeForce GTX 260 AMP! 2 Edition SKU should ship with clocks of 650 MHz and 1998 MHz on the GPU and GDDR3 memory, respectively. Notably, it is cited that the memory clock speed is actually 200 MHz slower than ZOTAC's original GTX 260 AMP! Edition part.

Pricing is unknown at the time of going to press, yet, expect release prior to the close of September.

In the meantime, DIGITIMES reports on concerns coming from NVIDIA AIBs about a possible overstock situation, being caused by the refreshed GTX 260 part.

With pricing on the 216 Shader Processor part being similar, it is claimed, to the current GTX 260 iteration, a suggested performance boost of between 5 and 10%, is expected to put the current GTX 260 solutions on unfamiliar ground.
