Windows 8: "Hybrid Boot" feature

By: Array

So much Windows 8 news is coming through that from today onward any Windows 8 news gets it's own little "Windows 8:" introduction. Windows 8 news is coming in at a steady pace now that the beta versions are jumping quickly and today is no exception, there's a new feature in Windows 8 that is set to replace the OS's default shutdown behaviour so that the boot up process can be sped up.

TweakTown image news/1/9/19412_1_windows_8_hybrid_boot_feature.jpg

"Hybrid Boot" uses advanced hibernation functionality when the computer is shut down (instead of actually shutting it down) and allows the machine to start up quicker. The feature can be found by typing "power button" into the start menu and then clicking "Change settings that are currently unavailable".

Download of the Day: Defraggler 2.04.297

By: Array

Our Download of the Day today is Defraggler 2.04.297.

Most defrag tools only allow you to defrag an entire drive. Defraggler lets you specify one or more files, folders, or the whole drive to defragment.

When Defraggler reads or writes a file, it uses the exact same techniques that Windows uses. Using Defraggler is just as safe for your files as using Windows.

At a glance, you can see how fragmented your hard drive is. Defraggler's drive map shows you blocks that are empty, not fragmented, or needing defragmentation.

• Give your hard drive a quick touch-up with Quick Defrag

• Organizes empty disk space to further prevent fragmentation

• Defragment while you sleep - and wake up with a faster PC. Set Defraggler to run daily, weekly or monthly

• Full Windows OS and Multi-lingual support

• Boot time defrag of system files

• Supports 37 major languages

Defraggler is made by Piriform, the company that also brought you CCleaner and Recuva, so is completely free!

Spotify Restricts Free Music Access, Incenses Media Pirates

By: Array

TweakTown image news/1/9/19389_013_spotify_restricts_free_music_access_incenses_media_pirates.jpg

In a blog post today, Spotify announced they would be making some big changes to its advertisement-funded free music streaming service, and not necessarily the good kind.

- New Spotify users will be able to enjoy our unrivalled free service as it is today for the first 6 months.

- As of May 1st, any user who signed up to the free service on or before November 1st 2010 will be able to play each track for free up to a total of 5 times. Users who signed up after the beginning of November will see these changes applied 6 months after the time they set up their Spotify account.

- Additionally, total listening time for free users will be limited to 10 hours per month after the first 6 months. That's equivalent to around 200 tracks or 20 albums.

10 hours per month? I tend to hit ten hours in a day, depending how long I'm working. And you can only ever play a single track five times? There are some songs I listen to five times a day- but I guess the real incentive is the following:

For anyone who thinks they might reach these limits, we hope you'll consider checking out our Unlimited and Premium services, neither of which will be affected, plus we have a 7-day free trial for Spotify Premium that we'd love you to try. Throughout May, we'll also have a pretty nice 30-day free trial for Spotify Premium - more details...

By: Array

A build of Windows 8 has leaked and will become the first accessible build of the new Operating System from Microsoft that will be available to the public. Everyone has seen the leaked screenshots, as partners with access to Windows 8 builds on Microsoft Connect are slowly leaking stuff out - but this will be the first leak that anyone will be able to download.

TweakTown image news/1/9/19366_12_windows_8_built_7850_leaked_internet_says_do_want.jpg

The leak has been posted on the BetaArchive forums and has been confirmed by numerous reputable sources that it is a legitimate build. Obviously from here, the people of the internets will post it on a public torrent tracking site and it will spread like crazy, to the point where even Crytek chief Cevat Yerli will be jealous of how many times it will get pirated.

The Opera Turbo feature is crucial for anyone who travels or just has a slow Internet connection. By reducing the size of the page, we can make browsing so much faster. So whether you're at a crowded Starbucks in San Francisco or are using a 3G modem in Sri Lanka, Opera Turbo can give you a better browsing experience.
