Everyone knows that a Wi-Fi network connection is going to be slower than a modern day wired connection. Up until today that statement was considered to be true, but a new report is suggesting that Wi-Fi could be, on the order of magnitudes, faster than even a fiber connection.
A joint research team from Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, have just release data from their recent experiments that show that Wi-Fi can be much faster than anyone had ever thought. Using very high-frequencies in the 237GHz range, the team was able to achieve a sustained transfer rate of 100Gbit/s.
That is 100 times faster than Google's Fiber Internet service. So fast that you could transfer an entire Blu-ray ISO in just 2 seconds. Unfortunately you should not expect to see this technology arrive in your home anytime soon as high frequencies such as the ones used in this experiment, do not pass through walls very good. They must rely on a line of sight between devices to even function at all.
Today, Ubiquiti Networks released two UniFi enterprise-grade Wi-Fi access points designed for outdoor deployments. The new UniFi Outdoor AC and UniFi Outdoor+ were designed with multi-Lane RF technology making them perfect for dense and "noisy" environments.
The UniFi Outdoor AC access point has been regarded as the first outdoor compatible 802.11ac device in the industry. The unit features a dual band, 3x3 MIMO access point that is capable of throughput up to 1750Mb/s. The unit is priced at $489 and is available now on the company's website.
The UniFi Outdoor+ features Ubiquiti's patent-pending Multi-Lane RF technology that is able to provide more than double the throughput of competitive solutions in environments with high interference, which is said to improve Wi-Fi performance in noisy and dense environments such as stadiums, public spaces, conference centers, and college campuses. The unit features a single band 2.4GHz 2x2 MIMI access point and is priced at $189 and can be purchased on the company's website.
Super Talent Technology has just released their first Wi-Fi related product that is aimed at making file sharing between mobile devices much easier. The new Wi-Cap--short for wireless capsule--enables customers to easily share files, photos, music, and videos with nearby devices.
The new Wi-Cap from Super Talent is compatible for use on laptops, tablets, smartphones, and desktop PCs that have a wireless connection. Compatibility with a wide variety of browser,s as well as support for Mac, Windows, and Linux, makes the Wi-Cap one of the most feature rich devices of its kind.
Using the Wi-Cap is as easy as clicking on menus that appear in a browser interface after a Wi-Fi connection has been established. The unit is password-protected, which prevents unwanted persons from accessing data stored on the device. IDF 2013 - Today at the 2013 Intel Developer Forum we got a chance to stop by the PLX booth and talk with Larry Chisvin about the companies new ExpressFabric technology. Larry was kind enough to walk us through their new "Top of Rack" switch that allows up to 32 servers to be connected without individual NIC cards.
Larry says that the system shown in the video is just a proof of concept and that they will be releasing products based on this technology in the future. The Device will also allow for the removal of Infiniband HCAs.
Today, TRENDnet announced that it has began shipping its new TPE-1620WS 16-Port Gigabit Web Smart PoE+ Switch. The company says that this all metal, rack-mountable, managed PoE switch features 16 Gigabit PoE+ ports and two shared SFP slots.
Security protocols including ACL, SSL, MAC/port filtering, 802.1X, TACACS+, and RADIUS support layered security controls. The TPE-1620WS is IPv6 ready, with full IPv6 support. Embedded traffic management technology includes: 802.3ad link aggregation, Asymmetric VLAN, 802.1Q VLAN, Voice VLAN, GVRP, 802.1p Class of Service (CoS), and QoS queue scheduling. Traffic comparison charts, error group charts, and a convenient cable diagnostic test aides in rapid troubleshooting. Each of the 16 ports automatically support PoE+ (30 Watts) and PoE (15 Watts) power-connected devices. Featuring the company's GREENnet technology, the TPE-1620WS is capable of powering down the ports when they're not in use, which offers up to a 70 percent increase in power savings. TRENDnet says that the TPE-1620WS is available online and from participating retail partners at an MSRP of $529.99.
For years now, San Francisco citizens have wished for there to be a free Wi-Fi service in their parks, and now thanks to Google, 31 of the city's plazas, playgrounds, parks, and rec centers are getting just that. Google donated $600,000 to install the free service, which is still pending approval.
The $600,000 gift will cover the equipment, installation, maintenance and service for the next two years after which it is still uncertain what will happen to the networks. If things go as planned, installation will begin as early as November and would wrap up sometime in April of 2014, just in time for park weather. Advocates and Google hope that this installation will serve as a model that will eventually grow into a city-wide free Wi-Fi network.

ASUS will be showing off a ton of new products at this years's Computex show in Taipei, Taiwan. A lot of products will feature the new Wi-Fi standard 802.11ac, and to complement those products, the company is launched a new 802.11ac router.
The new ASUS RT-AC68U is being touted as the first dual-band 802.11ac router with AC1900 data rates up to 1900Mbps. This performance can be attributed to AiRadar Beamforming technology, which helps establish a stronger connections and produce 250 percent better range.
ASUS says that you will also build a file share between other ASUS routers via attached USB drives with no need for a PC or other device handling the transfer. At the time of publishing, there is no word on pricing or availability, but previous ASUS flagship routers ran in the $200 range and it would be safe to expect the RT-AC68U to be near that as well.
There has already been some experimentation with "Super Wi-Fi" networks using the white spaces spectrum in the US, and now Mountain View-based search giant Google are poised to use the same technology to deliver Internet access to ten schools across South Africa.
The Verge has reported that "launching the test network is Google's most direct effort yet to demonstrate the potential of white spaces... as a means of delivering faster internet connectivity to the developing world and other rural areas."
"White spaces" are bands of unused television spectrum that allows signals to travel farther and penetrate deeper into buildings than the commonly used 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi spectrum bands.
