SK Hynix: DDR5 memory in 2020, while DDR6 development begins

Anthony Garreffa | Jan 29, 2019 7:31 PM CST

SK Hynix research fellow Kim Dong-Kyun has said that the DDR5 memory standard could hit the P{C next year, where it will kick things off at a huge DDR5-5200 offering twice the bandwidth of DDR4-2666.

SK Hynix: DDR5 memory in 2020, while DDR6 development begins

Last year SK Hynix developed a working prototype of a 16-gigabit (2GB) DDR5 DRAM chip that reached 5200 MT/s with just 1.1V. Kim explained: "We are discussing several concepts of the post DDR5. One concept is to maintain the current trend of speeding up the data transmission, and another is to combine the DRAM technology with system-on-chip process technologies, such as CPU".

The company is working on its own innovations that will continue to make DDR5 dazzle, developing technologies that will hopefully beat its competition which is also making DDR5 memory. Kim teased: "We have developed a multi-phase synchronization technology that enables keeping the voltage during a high-speed operation in a chip at a low level by placing multiple phases within the IP circuit, so the power used on each phase is low but the speed is high when combined".

Thermaltake reveals liquid-cooled RGB DDR4-3200MHz RAM

Derek Strickland | Jan 8, 2019 9:40 AM CST

CES 2019 - Thermaltake debuts its first RAM modules with stylish flair and liquid-cooled performance.

Thermaltake reveals liquid-cooled RGB DDR4-3200MHz RAM

Aimed at enthusiast gamers, Thermaltake's new WaterRam sports liquid-cooling to ensure longer memory life with lower operating temps, all with a splash of color. The memory comes in 8GB modules clocked in at DDR4-3200MHz with tight 16-18-18-38 timings and rated at 1.35V. The kits support Intel XMP 2.0 overclocking profiles and modules come in two 16GB (8GBx2) and 32GB (8GBx4) configurations. The WaterRam's RGB rocks 16.8 million colors with various profiles, and fits neatly into Thermaltake's fleet of radiant-lit hardware across its RGB Plus ecosystem.

The two-way liquid cooling array allows Thermaltake's WaterRam to maintain cool temps as low as 30C, and its higher-end copper water block and aluminum heat sink lets you choose between liquid cooling or conventional cooling.

Samsung increases DRAM production, cheaper prices in 2H 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Nov 1, 2017 7:37 PM CDT

Samsung is ramping up its DRAM production, with the company setting itself up to expand two of its DRAM manufacturing plants in Hwasung and Pyeongtaek, both in South Korea.

Samsung increases DRAM production, cheaper prices in 2H 2018

Samsung will be re-purposing some of its 2D NAND flash at its Hwasung plant, which will then be used to boost DRAM production, which should start in Q1 2018. The Pyeongtaek-based plant is also being refitted, with DRAM manufacturing clean rooms that will be built on the plant's second floor.

But we all want to know when cheaper DDR4 will be here, which is what Samsung is going to be able to offer once DRAM production is up, but don't expect anything until the second half of 2018. The PC industry isn't the only place where increased DRAM production will alleviate shortages, as smartphones and tablets also use lots of DRAM these days. DRAM stock has been depleted over the last 9 months or so, with RAM prices skyrocketing up by to 100%.
