Haier 7G2 14-inch Sandybridge Notebook Hands-on

By: Array

Haier 7G2 was on display at IDF Beijing 2011 showing off its Core i7 Sandybridge processor.

This 14-inch metallic beauty has metal wire drawing on the palm rest and an ATI HD 6730 which gives it a 3DMark06 score of 11,000. If you're wondering if you should be impressed, well, you should, the current industry average for an equivalent desktop replacement is around 9,000. The 7G2 comes in both Core i3 and i5 options with a 350 and 500GB hard drive options with 2GB/4GB RAM varieties.

My initial impressions of this notebook aren't great, the keyboard has a great deal of flex (I was kind in the above video since the booth staff beamed so proudly over his machine) and the track pad is small for a 14 inch device. The woes of the device don't end there, the mouse buttons offer poor feed back and there are a lack of USB ports as I was only able to count two on the entire system.

The 3DMark06 score got out attention, but the keyboard has us hesitant on wanting to even try to get our hands on for a review!

Nexus Tech Introduces SM-800 Silent Mouse

Have you or any of your over-caffeinated stress-riddled office coworkers developed an unnerving twitch due to sitting at your desk all day, harried by the incessant ambient clicking of mouses (do we say "mice" when pluralizing the device? anyone?)?

Well Nexus Technology has the product for you! They introduce today their SM-800 ("SM" presumably standing for "Silent Mouse"- that kind of simplicity is very comforting in an age where every tech product has a name that sounds like something that belongs in space), with patented "Switch" technology. The latter is what gives the SM series its stress-relieving silence:

RumorTT: Chrome OS will be released in three months

By: Array

Google has their head buried deep in Chrome OS land where the operating system is expected to ship sometime in Q2 of this year. Google is reportedly working out retail deals with manufacturers and suppliers. Recently there has been lots of testing going on at the factory level with partners such as Acer and Samsung.

TweakTown image news/1/9/19240_647_rumortt_chrome_os_will_be_released_in_three_months.jpg

Chrome OS is being described as being an "optimized experience" for netbooks and will come with Wi-Fi and 3G options. Chrome OS will only ship on specific hardware following deals that are struck between Google and the manufacturers. Chromium OS (the open source development version of Chrome OS) will be available as a disk image so that enthusiasts can put Chrome OS on any machine they please - however, this won't get the same support from Google.

AMD mobile GPU roadmap for the next two years, leaked

By: Array

Wimbledon, Heathrow, Chelsea and Thames - these are the codenames of AMD's next-generation mobile GPUs. The 28nm-based GPUs are expected to be released over next 12 months or so with the first three, Heathrow, Chelsea and Thames set for production starting Q4 2011 with a release of November 2011. Wimbledon behind them with a release sometime in Q2, 2012.

APU's have changed the market and thus, the releases feel this love. The 28nm product lineup shows a redefinition of the categories - "Value" is gone. In its place will be the mainstream/performance GPU, Thames. Thames uses a 128-bit memory bus and has twice the performance of the 2011-based "Seymour" mobile GPU (which is the Radeon HD 6400M). The thermal envelope on Thames will be 15 - 25W which is quite a bit higher than the 10W associated with previous entry-level mobile GPUs.

Lenovo Announces Next Gen Ultraportables: ThinkPad X220 Laptop, X220 Convertible Tablet for April

By: Array

From Research Triangle Park, just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina, Lenovo announced today its next generation of ultraportable laptops: The ThinkPad X220 Notebook and the X220 Convertible Tablet PC. Lenovo has given the tech consumer the option of purchasing a super-transforming-ultraportable device with detachable keyboard and trusty pen- or instead, you know, a regular notebook. The X220 is however far from standard as it brings with it a host of nifty features that will be sure to make 2010's Best-Selling Ultraportable Laptop a surefire success in 2011 (According to IDC Worlwide Quarterly PC Tracker, February 2011)

The spec sheets, which we've attached in the gallery at the end of the article, read almost the exact same- Lenovo has outdone their previous efforts in releasing an ultra ultra portable product in tandem with their notebook. The X220 Tablet is therefore quite remarkable in that it possesses almost the exact same external and internal hardware features as its less-transformable cousin, the main tradeoff being that the Tablet weighs in almost a pound heavier than its alternate (~3.88 lbs) with maximum 66% the battery life.

Microsoft's Rahul Sood says every PC industry exec should use a MacBook

By: Array

Voodoo founder and ex-HP guru, Rahul Sood has loved controversy. Short of turning up to an event in an Egg ala Lady Gaga, he has always loved causing quite the stir. Today is no different, he expressed his pure love for Apple hardware by saying "Every executive in the PC industry should use an Apple notebook".

TweakTown image news/1/9/19000_85_microsoft_s_rahul_sood_says_every_pc_industry_exec_should_use_a_macbook.jpg

He later tweeted that the real meaning behind that comment was that they were of higher quality than those that come with Windows by default. It sounds like a death stare toward his current employer, Microsoft, but it seems like it is a dig at his previous employer, HP.

iFixit rip apart the Apple MacBook Pro 2011 edition

By: Array

iFixit are at it again, this time ripping apart the 2011 edition of Apple's MacBook Pro. Some facts about the dissection of it show that the RAM and HDD are still user-replaceable parts, which is a good thing. The battery inside is a 77.5 watt-hour battery with Apple's claims of 7 hours of use.

TweakTown image news/1/8/18981_628_ifixit_rip_apart_the_apple_macbook_pro_2011_edition.jpg

They did find a tonne of thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and noted that this may cause overheating issues in the future, so to anyone who purchases one of these new MBP's, this is something of an important note. Another surprising thing they found was one of the screws near the subwoofer enclosure had been stripped and there was also an unlocked ZIF socket for the IR sensor, tsk, tsk.

HP refresh enterprise notebooks, show off 32-hour battery life capable of watching the LotR trilogy on a single charge

By: Array

HP now have a notebook that is capable of watching the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy on a single charge. Color me impressed HP. The new notebooks feature new processors and a sturdier, more power efficient design. HP's latest offerings go by the names of EliteBook and ProBook and are constructed with HP's "Forge" framework that includes aluminum-allow hinges, titanium-allow display latches, a magnesium-reinforced ABS chassis, a bottom-case drain in case of spills and a HP "DisplaySafe" frame.

The EliteBook 8460p (14-inch) and 8560p (15.6-inch) seem to be the premium outings which feature the HP DuraCase that meets the MIL-STD 810G military standards and boast up to 32 hours of runtime with an HP BB09 Ultra Extended Life battery. The ProBook line features the same attributes while offering more options in configurations ranging from ultra-light to desktop replacement.
