E3 2011 - Microsoft are calling all racing enthusiasts by releasing a new wireless gaming peripheral in the form of the Wireless Speed Wheel for the Xbox 360. The Wireless Speed Wheel launches in October and is a completely wireless controller, controlled intuitively with precise steering, standard controller buttons/triggers and haptic feedback with rumble. The device is compatible with all racing games right out of the box (with some limited functionality in games).
It will have a pricing of AUD$59.95 RRP and will ship to retailers worldwide beginning September 26, 2011. It includes trigger buttons for gas and break, with the rumble function providing immersion beyond current controllers. The new Xbox 360 Wireless Speed Wheel balances the realism of a real wheel with the feel and ease-of-use of a controller for great user edge in game play.
E3 2011 - That title is rockin', if I may say so myself. Next order of business? Nintendo's next-gen console announcement! As the dust settles from various Microsoft and Sony announcements, sans-next-gen consoles (BOO), Nintendo walk out of the rubble, dust and glare with their next-gen console, previously codenamed "Project Cafe". Wii U. Nintendo's Wii U is their next-gen console ready to change things up.
Nintendo changed things up with their motion-based controllers with the Wii, but now they've kicked it up a notch, or twenty. Included is a tablet-based 6.2-inch touch screen controller which has the usual array of buttons inclusive of a d-pad, four face buttons, four shoulder triggers, a power button and a camera. The controller features two analog sliders at the top of the controller versus the traditional sticks. IGN reports after a hands-on that it is remarkably light for its side, given that it's quite large for a controller.
E3 2011 - Sony are on a roll today, Vita and now a brand new deal that consists of a 24-inch 3D HD display designed by Sony specifically for gaming. The monitor uses active shutter glasses to produce 3D. It includes one pair of glasses, a 6-foot HDMI cable and one of the major 3D games that is launching this year (pictured is Resistance 3). The package rounds off at a very nice $499 with additional glasses setting you back $70.
Theres also another bundle that includes Resistance 3 and the Sharpshooter Move accessory that is $150.
E3 2011 - Sony's Next-Generation Portable has had a fair bit of presence on the internet lately and today Sony has officially unveiled what the NGP will be: Playstation Vita. Playstation Vita will include what we've all heard rumors of; dual touchscreens, ARM Coretex A9 core CPU (4 cores), tilt-sensitive SIXAXIS controls, front and rear facing cameras, etc. All of the previously rumored specs are pretty much spot on but now we're seeing the actual branding and a set of the launch games.
Uncharted is being shown off and from what I've seen it actually looks phenomenal. Price wise it seems Sony have really hit a home run with the WiFi model setting you back $249 and the 3G model at $299.
E3 2011 - TweakTown advises you to sit down before watching the below video. Below is the first multiplayer footage of the upcoming Battlefield 3. The video is titled "Operation Metro". The trailer (without spoiling it) involves a tonne of never-before-seen multiplayer footage, and had me screaming like a girl and by the end I had goose bumps.
Watched it - now "like" it on Facebook and share it, it's that good. Shout out to my nephew Corey for having this "liked" on his Facebook, that's what made me see it! WOW!
E3 2011 - E3 is here once again and it's time for a barrage of gaming-related news. Microsoft is out of the gate with news of a bunch of Kinect-compatible titles and additional video streaming services. Microsoft have said we should look forward to over 12 games that are Kinect-powered; EA franchises (Tiger Woods, FIFA, Madden and The Sims), Mass Effect 3, Disneyland Adventures, Kinect Sports Season Two, Dance Central 2 and as well as all future Tom Clancy games starting with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.
Minecraft is coming this winter, as well as Crytek's long-rumored Xbox 360 exclusive which was formerly known as "Codename: Kingdoms", now has a name; Ryse. A first-person action adventure game set in Ancient Rome. Fable: The Journey is a new entry in the Fable universe that takes place after the age of Heroes (sans Hayden Panettiere, save the cheerleader, save the world). All of these titles will feature Kinect use.

The debut trailer to Tomb Raider is out, with the new game being a complete reboot and re-telling of the character and story of Lara Croft. The trailer is totally CG but don't let that sway you, it looks hands down amazing and I for one will be keeping an eye out on this puppy from now on.
The story is about a frightened young woman (obviously Lara Croft) who has her story retold in a complete reboot of the series and we see her journey from that terrified girl to a hardened survivor.
The E3 teaser trailer for the upcoming Aliens-themed Aliens: Colonial Marines has come out and while it doesn't show anything off, it's a tease of things to come. The game is being developed by Gearbox (the peeps behind the revival of DNF, Borderlands) and published by SEGA, it'll hit the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC and has an estimated release date of Q1, 2012.
The game is explained as: "Aliens: Colonial Marines begins with an ostensibly abandoned ship, the U.S.S. Sulaco, recovered in orbit around LV-426. Players lead a group of highly trained United States Colonial Marines as they board the deserted craft to uncover the fate of the crew. They will have to fight to survive unspeakable horrors and their own anxieties as they chase down the truth behind a galaxy-spanning deception that places humanity at the mercy of the most murderous and deadly species in the universe. Aliens: Colonial Marines features authentic environments, such as the surface of LV-426 and Hadley's Hope, weapons inspired by the film series and is designed to provide an exhilarating and engaging new chapter in the Aliens universe."
Another game that I'm way too excited for, I truly hope they don't stuff it up and can recreate the tension of the movies and the popular Aliens Vs Predator games from way back when.
Fan of the Serious Sam games? Yes? Good. You're going to love the below trailer, Serious Sam is making a return in Serious Sam 3: BFE and it looks to have the same crazy, high-octane, constant-horde-of-omfg-enemies running at you wanting to kill you. A sweet polish of next-gen graphics when compared to the ageing first titles, and bigger, badder enemies and it creates a new entry in the Serious Sam franchise. Check out the below trailer to see what I mean:
Pretty slick, huh? I'm enjoying the huge enemies and swarms of foes, new weapons and iron sights make the cut. This is not the typical console ported COD clone with regenerating health and a cover system so that you never die and never complain to your Mom to return the game. This is serious, Serious Sam.
Ok so it's not exactly a demo and can be found as Deus Ex: Human Revolution PREBUILD READNFO-P2P. Either way someone's in some serious trouble for letting this one get out. A pre build of the highly anticipated Deus Ex Human Revolution has been leaked to the interwebz (Beats the hell out of some leaked Britney Spears single).
Apparently there's 10 - 12 hours of Gameplay and the graphics are meant to be retail quality. If they are or not it's good news either way because it means it should look good. Plus a pre build with 12 hours of Gameplay, that would represent most games these days being played through twice.
Of course we don't condone the illegal downloading and of course I didn't find it on one of the warez sites I frequently visit because I don't do that. So yeah.....anyway, I'm sure we'll start to hear some feedback about the game. Let's hope it's good, though, as the original Deus Ex was awesome.
THQ has just announced Metro: Last Light as a 2012 title for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms. The new foray into the Metro universe will feature multiplayer, something that was not available in Metro 2033. The developers are touting that they're exploring ammo as a currency; fresh idea, I love it! Below is the announcement trailer!
Danny Bilson, EVP Core Games, THQ has said:
We believe that Metro 2033 was a flawed masterpiece. It was a beautiful, original game that didn't get the marketing support it needed. We won't make that mistake with Metro: Last Light. This game improves on the original in every way - it will have more polish, deeper and more sophisticated gameplay, and satisfyingly visceral combat, without losing what our fans loved about the original. Metro: Last Light is another artful piece of game development from an Eastern European studio that will thrill and terrify anyone looking for a more cerebral experience than your typical first person shooter.
If $60 per recycled game wasn't enough, Activision Blizzard are launching an online service dubbed Call of Duty Elite that will work with the next outing in the COD universe, Modern Warfare 3 as well as future installments of the game. The monthly subscription fee will let users gain access to extra content that won't be available on discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give new levels to play.
Activision hasn't announced the cost of the Elite service, but it's expected to be at the $8 per month level, which isn't too bad and would sit side by side with the pricing of a Netflix account for example. Another feature of the Elite monthly cost will be tools available to the player in the form of analyzing performance within the game, such as stats on which weapons have been the most successful in killing enemies.
Sony don't want anymore losses or at least want to dodge them when they can. The PlayStation 3 was a very heavy investment for Sony and it only started paying off a little while back, the latest hacks on their PSN network aren't helping and are building them up for a heavy hit in the near future. Their next-generation portable (NGP) is set to change this and will be less investment heavy and [hope to be] more profitable.
Sony could use chip foundries to eliminate the cost of building their own semiconductor factory, also buying readily available parts or using contract manufacturers to reduce their upfront investment costs. Since they showed the NGP off earlier this year, Sony have been very quiet regarding the device. No launch date or price has been set and the investment is a key point in determining it's price when it launches.
If you haven't got Battlefield 3 on your wish list, haven't been up with the 12 minute gameplay footage or have to remove the rock you've been living under from your back, then you should know Battlefield 3 is going to redefine FPS gaming as we know it in the next 6 months. DICE have pushed their new graphics engine, Frostbite 2 into this game and the results are simply awe-inspiring.
EA's PWNED gets exclusive access to DICE (jealous!) and get to look under the hood at Battlefield 3. The video above shows off some never-before-seen footage and there's multiple interviews from Lead Designers down to the original map designers from Battlefield 2. I don't want to spoil too much, but the video is well worth it if you're interested in Battlefield 3, for those of you who aren't, feel free to google Justin Bieber.
Though Japan had initially bristled at having the troubled and user-compromising PlayStation Network go live again in Japan, Sony announced today that the PSN is back in its homeland, as well as the rest of Asia.
(graphic courtesy of Engadget- it was just too pretty / topical to not use)
After having lost an estimated $171 million in revenue from what will surely be known as the PSNightmare of 2011, this is at least somewhat good news. Tomorrow, the service will be up and running again in most of Asia, even Reluctant Japan- but users in South Korea and Hong Kong will have to hold their horses until the end of the month before they can expect the online service to return.
Either way, I'm sure sighs of relief are being heard all around Sony's offices as, hopefully, we come to the close of this ordeal. Press release after the break.
Australia's Federal Attorney-General and Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O'Connor has released his draft of proposed guidelines for R18+ games in Australia. The guidelines detail what is and what is not, in Brendan's belief, acceptable for the R18+ rating.
The Gillard Government wants to provide better guidance for parents and remove unsuitable material from children and teenagers. The introduction of an R18+ classification will help achieve that and will also bring Australia into line with comparable nations. This issue has been on the table for many years, without the necessary progress to make a change. We've recently seen several states publicly express their support for an adult only rating for games and I'm keen to reach a unanimous decision at the July meeting.
The proposed guidelines for the MA15+ and R18+ ratings are available here.
Following up on the reboot of the PlayStation Network, Sony is covering all of its
asses bases. PSN and Qrocity users, pending they had an account before April 20, 2011 (like anybody was lining up to sign up to either after that date) can enroll in AllClear ID PLUS Identity Theft protection program. See the blog post below for more info, but hey, not a bad start on the road to reparations.
Starting today, PlayStation Network and Qriocity account holders in the United States can begin the enrollment process for the identity theft protection program by visiting http://us.playstation.com/news/consumeralerts/identity-theft-protection/. We are also notifying customers of the enrollment landing page via email, which you will receive in your inbox this week.
Not hugely exciting because we have no information whatsoever beyond what the headline reads, but good to know that Sony's got its eye on the prize. I'm hoping they'll have some sort of touchscreen-format-meets-kinect-like-interface.... so basically, Minority Report in a game console.
Executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato reportedly explained to shareholders today:
In the game segment, we have the NGP to launch later this year. So we have development expenses to be incurred for this product. For the home console, the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we will introduce the product I cannot discuss - but development work is underway, so the costs are incurred there.
Since Nintendo has already confirmed that they'll be announcing "Project Cafe" at E3, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony throws us some more info at E3.

Remember yesterday when we posted that awesome YouTube video of that dude Police Academy'ing an old school Street Fighter SNES match? Well musician JJ (Double J) has put together a pretty catch rap song about being Sagat with Vega in Street Fighter IV.
He even works in the button combinations into the song: "Charge Back Forward Punch / Hit him with the claw". The video is complete with Double J's gameplay, and to tell the truth - dude rocks with Vega. I'm not entirely sure what he has against Sagat, but he's sure happy about beating him all the time.
