Digital downloads - Where's it at?

By: (more) | Posted: Jan 20, 2008 10:27 pm

With all the talk of digital downloads becoming the next big thing it wasn't going to take long for someone to put up a poll and see exactly where the newly announced Apple TV HD downloads sit.

The boys over at engadgetHD have done exactly that.

With almost 4,500 votes at the time of writing, over 50% of people say they're sticking with HD discs while only 20% of people say "Consider me sold".

While HD Downloads are good in theory, the problem remains that a lot of people don't have the internet infrastructure to properly support 1080P movies coming in at 30GB - 50GB. Currently Apple TV offer 720P movies coming in at significantly less. This might sound impressive, but with not all movies supporting surround sound, the feature only being available in the US and huge amounts of compression used it really isn't.

While digital downloads may be the next big step for standard definition content it's safe to say that it's going to be a while till it takes on the quality and features of next generation HD formats like Blu-ray. You also can't forget the fact that we all love to have hard copies of everything, meaning the DVD/HD rack isn't going away any time soon!
