AMD 790FX looking mighty strong

By: (more) | Posted: Oct 26, 2007 12:14 am

Early findings from MSI in regards to AMD's upcoming 790FX motherboards shows some very promising overclocking results. They've been tinkering with an early revision motherboard using this chipset in conjunction with an Athlon 64 X2 6400+ processor, and well, the results certainly speak for themselves in the CPU-Z screeny below :-

The 510MHz FSB you see above was accomplished with air cooling folks. To keep other components out of the equation MSI ramped down the multiplier to x5 and dropped the HTT divider to x1. For current Intel platforms 510MHz isn't exactly anything to write home about, but for an AMD HyperTransport setup it's quite a feat indeed.

Paired up with Phenom and a Radeon HD 3870 this should (hopefully) allow AMD to make up some lost ground and close the gap on Intel.

Thanks to NordicHardware for the heads up.
