RV670 to be named Radeon HD 38x0

By: (more) | Video Cards News | Posted: Oct 22, 2007 8:37 am

Tom's Hardware Taiwan has scored a couple of pictures, but more importantly what appears to be the final model names for the upcoming RV670 based graphics cards from AMD. Although AMD has yet to confirm any model names of its upcoming cards, there was a previous post on GeCube's website mentioning the 3800-series. The two cards from Tom's Hardware are apparently the ATI Radeon HD 3870 and the Radeon HD 3850.

The spec's haven't really changed from what we've already heard via the grapevine but if this information is reliable, then it seems like AMD has decided that the RV670 is different enough from the R600 core to justify a generation name change. It could possibly be that AMD has done this due to the inclusion of DX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1 support.

Both cards will apparently feature the full 320 stream engines as well as a 256-bit memory interface. Hopefully the higher clock speeds will make up for the narrow memory interface compared to the R600 design. The Radeon HD 3870 should come with 512MB of GDDR4 memory and the 3850 will have 512 or 256MB of GDDR3 memory. Final clock speeds haven't been set in stone as yet, so we're not going to list the numbers we've seen in the past.

Other additions include UVD or Unified Video Decoder, something that was missing from the R600 series in hardware, as AMD claimed that the GPU was fast enough to do this in software. The RV670 will apparently also work with what AMD calls CrossFire X which should allow for up to four GPU's to work together in an AMD 790FX based motherboard.
