LaCie is the first company that we know of to introduce a 2TB external drive, the Big Disk Extreme+. This monster driver features two 1GB drives in a RAID 0 array and they're fitted inside one of LaCie's aluminium cases. The drives feature 32MB of cache and are cooled by a thermo-regulated cooling fan.
It also features three interfaces, USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800. It's also got an automatic power off feature and triple power management. The Big Disk Extreme+ is supplied with a copy of EMC Retrospect for making backups of Windows PCs and Macs.
The downside of the LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ would possibly be the selling price of US$849, that's more than twice as much as the 1GB version which retails at $349.99. LaCie also has a 1.5TB version for $599. Currently LaCie is accepting pre-orders, as the 2TB version isn't expected to ship until early August.
