Microsoft Surface - reality gets one step closer to Sci-Fi

By: (more) | Posted: May 31, 2007 6:59 am

Microsoft has unveiled a new technology, it looks like a rather stylish coffee table and goes under the name of Surface. If you've seen Minority Report, then you'll have an idea of how this works and it really looks cool in action. The table top incorporates a 30-inch touch sensitive display with multi touch input. So far it can only do fairly basic things, but think of this as a project in development.

Initially, you'll only be able to play with one of the Surface tables in the US if you visit a T-Mobile store, Starwood hotels or Harrah's in Las Vegas. The hardware inside the table consists of a 1GHz Vista PC, a rear projector and some type of cameras that captures your finger movements. Considering that Microsoft is supposedly charging US$10,000 for one of these, it seems like they're trying to re-take some of the R&D money quite quickly on this one.

You can watch a video of Surface in action here
