Acer Gemstone official information

| Posted: May 5, 2007 6:34 am

If you remember, we had some early info about the new Acer Gemstone laptop. Well, it turns out that this was of a different model than the one that is being displayed on the newly launched pre-view site over at Acer. The model listed there is the Aspire 5920 which is a 15-inch model without DVI. The design of this new consumer range of laptops from Acer is quite appealing and looks quite different from its current range. Although the white keyboard might accumulate a lot of grubby marks quite quickly, but this is generally a problem with any white consumer electronics, which I'm sure Apple can tell you more about.

Besides having a 15-inch display it looks like the Aspire 5920 will keep the HD DVD-ROM/DVD burner that the Aspire 7720 (which we reported about here) as well as most of the other features mentioned. It will also have Dolby Home Theater certified speakers and a fancy glowing LED inside the keyboard that lights up when it's charging. Acer has also added a range of multimedia buttons along each short side of the keyboard and for some strange reason the spacebar has a very odd design. No hardware specifications where revealed at this time, but our best guess is that the Gemstone range will feature the upcoming Intel Santa Rosa platform.

A range of new TravelMate ProFile notebooks are also shown on the preview site and judging from the various pictures, there will be at least three different models. These all feature that lovely curved Acer keyboard, my personal favorite when it comes to laptop keyboards. On top of this there are models with HD DVD-ROM/DVD writer combo drives, DVI, TV-out and some even seems to have built in TV-tuners. Other features include memory card readers, FireWire, finger print scanners and smart card security.

Have a look at the Acer preview site here for some flash animations and PDF's of the new models.
