Update: $100 discount is now gone on the HTC Vive but you can still get a $100 gift card with purchase.
The Microsoft Store must not have sold enough HTC Vive units this Christmas season, because they've brought back the best offer of the year last seen Cyber Monday. This week when you buy an HTC Vive VR system through the Microsoft Store you'll get a $100 discount and a $100 bonus gift card. Taking the gift card bonus into account, that effectively makes the HTC Vive a $599 headset, which is the same price as the cheaper alternative Oculus Rift.
Now the Rift and the Vive each have their own pros and cons, but few would argue the Oculus Rift is the better of the two systems, as the Vive grants you greater options for gameplay (full room vs. stationary headset). Now with there only being a $100 price difference between the two at Microsoft, do you just soak up the $100 loss and get the better system? Great question.
- HTC Vive VR System + $100 Gift Card - $699 (list $799)
- Oculus Rift VR Headset + $100 Gift Card - $599 (list $599)
In the case of the Oculus Rift, Microsoft does offer the same $100 bonus gift card. This Gift Card is actually more of a "Gift Code" which arrives via email once your order ships and is good for anything sold at the Microsoft Store like games, computers, tablets, and software.
Microsoft has been offering the $100 bonus gift code for awhile now. In fact the last few weeks they've been running the gift code promo, but it's may not have been a strong enough offer to move the Vive. Thus the $100 discount has come to the potential rescue. What we do know is that this is the best HTC Vive offer since Cyber Monday.
