- VIA Launches VIA C7 Processor

VIA announced their latest low powered processor just before the weekend, the C7. Competing against Intel's Pentium M, the 'Esther' cored C7 is produced on a 90nm SOI process with the top-end 2.0GHz version only using 20W during peak levels, and 0.1W at idle. You can get to VIA's press announcement on the new C7 series over here, and for those of you interested, DVHardware have extended upon the announcement with further comments and benchmark results.

Taipei, Taiwan, 27 May 2005 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies and PC platform solutions, today announced the new VIA C7 processor family based on the 'Esther' core, the world's smallest, lowest power and most secure native x86 processor.

IBM's leading 90nm System-on-Insulator (SOI) manufacturing technology employed at their state-of-the-art fabrication plant at East Fishkill, New York has permitted unprecedented levels of integration, providing the basis for significant performance boosts within industry-leading power and thermal profiles. With a tiny die size of a mere 30mm2, the VIA C7 processor idle power is as low as 100mW (0.1W), while 2.0GHz will run at about 20 watts peak power, an average of 40% cooler than competitor solutions.

- ASUS Introduces P5WD2 Premium Motherboard With Native DDR2-1066 Support

Based on Intel's flagship 955X chipset, ASUS have just unleashed their "P5WD2 Premium" motherboard which offers superior memory performance capabilities to competing 955X boards in that the ASUS variant allows for native support of DDR2-1066 memory speeds and higher, versus standard 955X specs of 1066/800MHz FSB (front-side-bus) and DDR2-667/533 (memory). Not surprisingly, the P5WD2 Premium is no feature-lacking board either. Full details in ASUS's supporting PR folks.

Taipei, Taiwan; May 19, 2005 - With industry-leading engineering, the ASUS P5WD2 Premium is the first Intel 955X chipset motherboard to provide native memory support up to DDR2-1066 or more. By unleashing the true potential of DDR2 memory standards, the P5WD2 Premium delivers superior overclocking capability for memory and overall system performance.

"With multimedia and 3D graphics becoming so prominent in the computing industry, it's important that a motherboard, which is the heart and soul of a system, to offer ample performance for all the different complex tasks," said Joe Hsieh, Director of ASUS Motherboard Business. "The P5WD2 Premium with exclusive native support for DDR2-1066 and a host of overclocking features is excellent for the most resource-hungry applications."
