'Godzilla', 'King Kong' cinematic universe coming from Warner Bros

After last year's U.S. 'Godzilla' reboot made just enough bank for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures to guarantee a sequel, the studios have today jointly announced a new franchise which encompasses the upcoming 'King Kong' reboot, and which will serve as a part of a much larger, Marvel-style cinematic universe.

According to the joint press release, 2017's 'Kong: Skull Island' and 2018's 'Godzilla 2' will lead up to 'Godzilla VS Kong' in 2020, with the promise of other characters from Toho's Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidora making future appearances.

'Kong: Skull Island' will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and 'Godzilla 2' will be directed by Gareth Edwards after he finishes up on next year's 'Star Wars' spin-off 'Rogue One'.
