With 2012's 'Men In Black III' grossing a respectable $624 million, unsurprisingly Sony Pictures have been wanting to continue the franchise, even toying with a Jump Street/ MIB mashup as revealed in the infamous Sony hack. But now it looks like the studio is going down the route of a straight reboot - without its key star.
Interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, producer Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald confirmed that development on the franchise was continuing in a "very active" manner, noting that "we're in the middle of it". Asked if Will Smith would be reprising his role, Parkes replied "Most likely no", before MacDonald added "It will be reinvented as a trilogy".
For long time fans, it looks like the 'Men In Black' franchise which started in 1997 is over. And that's a bit of a shame.
