- 74gig Raptor VS. 300gig ULTRA-16

These two hard drives each represent pure dominance in their own ways, Western Digital's 74GB 10,000RPM Raptor which speaks for itself, and the new 300GB Maxtor drive with a whopping 16MB of cache complimenting it. Guru Hardware (new site on the block) thought it be interesting to see how these two do battle.. seek time/faster rpm Vs double the cache (and a crapload more storage space), both weighing in with a similar price tag. The famous 74gig Western Digital Raptor vs. the new Maxtor Ultra-16 300gig. The raptors gained its popularity by providing the average enthusiast with low seek times, which means lower load times. The new Ultra-16 series has increased cache size, which is supposed to help with file transfers and speed as well.

The real Question here is if the Maxtor's 16mb cache and NCQ can match the Raptor's 10,000rpm. We used SATA power for both; the Maxtor was hooked up as an extra drive while the Raptor was used as the primary boot drive. We ran 3 tests: the Disk Bench, the ATTO Disk Benchmark, and the Fresh Diagnose Hard disk Benchmark.
