- Overclocking the AMD Athlon XP-M CPU
The ole' faithful AthlonXP platform is not all that far from complete darkness now, what with AMD giving it the big flick at the end of the year. However, for a lot of people it's still considered a great performing bang for the buck. Mobile XP's brought new life to the AXP's a while back with their amazing overclockability, and now that they've become far more widely available along with a cheaper price tag, they are still quite enticing as a budget performance solution. Tweakers Australia's latest article takes you through the (very) easy process of cranking these chips up far far beyond their rated speeds.
Overclocking has long been a favourite method of tweaking PC performance by avid PC enthusiasts. The concept of it probably got its start back in the days of the Intel 486 and AMD 5x86. For example, the 5x86 was the basis of a lot of overclocking fun, because you could increase the front side bus speed from 33MHz to 50MHz and reduce the multiplier to 3.0x and thus get a 150 MHz processor. Not bad, at least for that time period. The practice received a mighty boost with Intel's release of the Celeron processor, especially the famous Celeron A. By increasing the front side bus speed from 66MHz to 100MHz, you effectively could overclock the Celeron from 266MHz up to 400MHz, with ease.
