T-Mobile announced it will launch a "Smartphone Equality" plan designed to help provide incentives to customers paying their mobile phone bill on time each month. Each subscriber that has paid their bill on time for 12 straight months has the chance to purchase a new smartphone or tablet at the best price the company currently is promoting.

As such, half of Americans are unable to receive "free" smartphones, zero-down pricing, or other incentives that T-Mobile and other carriers offer, according to T-Mobile CEO John Legere. This effort could also help boost smartphone penetration in the United States, which currently ranks in the No. 13 position, according to Legere's blog post.

"We've been a part of the problem, too. But no more," Legere said in a T-Mobile blog post. "The simple truth is that our relationship with that customer is actually a better predictor of future behavior than their credit history. So this isn't just the right thing to do, it's good business."

This effort could also help boost smartphone penetration in the United States, which currently ranks in the No. 13 position, according to Legere's blog post.
