- Rotated Grids & Translucency In Gaming
Accelnation have taken a look at transparent/translucent surfaces as well as a few antialiasing methods used from within a modern gaming environment in their latest editorial, also explaining why "rotated grid" antialiasing is superior to "ordered grid" antialiasing. "What the heck is antialiasing full stop" you say? - Don't worry, they cover that base too. Very interesting reading.
A computer image is composed of many tiny pixels, yet although these pixels are small, each one does cover a finite area of the image. Every pixel can be thought of as a tiny window onto the virtual world beyond, and the task of the computer is to determine the single pixel color that best represents that tiny view. However, rendering speed is also an important consideration for real-time graphics and for this reason the overall pixel color is often determined by considering just one point within each pixel (point sampling). Unfortunately, the color at this single point may not be representative of the entire area covered by the pixel.
- Kingwin 3.5" & 5.25" Portable USB Enclosures
Need to find an easier safer way to cart your hard drive around from PC to PC for storage movement? There's no doubt a portable USB enclosure is the ticket for you, but which one? Kingwin's 3.5" USB 2.0 enclosure seems to be a well constructed one. Made from aluminium and plastic, it also looks kinda funky with it's blue power light bar. Overclockers Cafe not only check this out in their latest review but also KingWin's 5.25" variant, meaning easy portability of optical devices such as your DVD burner. A very nifty idea that will come in handy for many of you.
Portable storage devices have really been put in the limelight because of the popularity and wide availability by thumb drives. Thumb drives are great personal storage units but what do you do when you have more than a couple hundred megs to transport? Say your MP3 collection, videos or otherwise big files. This is where USB drive racks come in. They give you the ability to make a hard drive hot swappable and give you ready access to as much storage as the drive in question has. Kingwin in putting out their new USB drive enclosure, made the next logical progression in external drives by putting out a 5.25" USB drive enclosure. The ability of making a optical drive portable is welcome indeed. You can take your CD burner, DVD player or DVD burner with you and plug them into any machine with a USB port. You will still need software to play or record DVDs but that is a small issue.
