- Intel High Definition Audio Tests
Digit-Life have today checked out the new Realtek ALC880 high definition audio sound solution found on Intel's latest motherboard chipsets, the 915 and 925 range. They help explain what features and enhancements can be expected over traditionally common lower-end AC'97 based sound solutions which have been implemented on most motherboards for quite some time now.
High Definition Audio (HD Audio) is a successor and evolutional sequel to the AC'97 specification. New codecs are of the same form-factor and are compatible with HD Audio controllers bottom-up. Presumably out of the principle "users buy megahertz", Intel chose the name by the main feature - support for high definition audio formats. But despite the name, the standard has some differences.
- Is DDR2 ready to replace DDR1?
The folks over at Legit Reviews have conducted a series of benchmarking tests with some DDR2 memory today. They use ABIT's new AA8-DuraMax motherboard paired with Crucial's PC2-4200 memory for the task, also clocking the memory up to a whopping 733mhz in the process. With the results attained from the tests, they then compare to a DDR1 based setup (using Corsair's XMS PC-3200 XL memory) and provide a clearer picture of what can be expected from jumping ship to a DDR2 platform.
To get a better understanding of DDR2 memory we need to go back to when it all began! It was back in October of 2002 that things started looking good for DDR2 memory and that it would actually become the successor to the DDR1 memory line. This is back during the time period where enthusiasts were running single channel DDR1 PC-2700 memory! So on paper DDR2 PC-4200 was a huge performance leap in raw bandwidth power, but was also meant to improve memory latencies and lower the overall power consumption. It was the goal to bring DDR2 out at PC-3200 and PC-4200, while lowering the voltages down to1.8V! As you can tell DDR2 533MHz would be a huge performance leap over DDR1 333MHz! The designers were happy and went off to build DDR2!
