- Iwill ZMAXdp Dual-Opteron Barebone

Covering new ground in the SFF biz, the folks at AMDBoard have sourced a press release from IWill Corporation announcing their ZMAXdp barebones system to sport dual AMD Opteron 200-series microprocessors. Quite a nice achievement from IWill given the space constraints involved when building upon an SFF design. The system is based on nVidia's nForce3 Pro 250Gb, in turn also providing all the native features the chipset offers. You can catch all the details over at AMDBoard.

IWILL ZMAXdp is designed with the digital professional in mind, from pre-visualization to audio post-production. With features to boost performance and a stable architecture, the AMD Opteron processor for workstations is key to the end-to-end digital production environment. The AMD Opteron processor, enabling simultaneous 32 and 64-bit computing, represents the landmark introduction of AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture. The AMD Opteron processor is designed to run existing 32-bit applications with outstanding performance and offers customers a simplified migration path to 64-bit computing.

- Dont know what PearPC is? Now you do!

OverclockingHQ have a fresh article up which talks of a software project called "PearPC", basically an emulator. This 'aint no normal piece of emulating software though, to the contrary in fact. It allows one to run "Mac OS X" on X86 based PC's, a nifty feat that one previously thought impossible to accomplish. Although still in very early development stages, frequent updates and supporting info can be found over at PearPC's official site. One should also note the following comments before they get too excited :-

Keep in mind this isn't really a production release, more of a proof of concept release. Emulation is about 1/40 speed, meaning that your 3Ghz processor will behave like a 75Mhz processor. Though, OS X will install; albeit at a crawl. It takes about 5 hours to install the first CD on an Athlon XP 1600+. Installation takes all available resources, preventing anything else from being done simultaneously. It's not possible to throw enough hardware at PearPC for it to truly be usable. For reference, that installation on a relatively modern Mac would take 15-20 minutes.
